PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Being a genuine role model for young explorers starts with showing honesty in every activity. Leading outdoor trips or group lessons offers a chance to act with heart. Three months of experience with school-aged children taught you that indoor voices are optional. Helping local families feel welcome and heard keeps our community happy. Showing kindness and tact goes a long way when managing a diverse group of kids and coworkers. Maintaining a steady reliable presence while solving problems keeps everything running smoothly even when games get chaotic. Finding adventure in our parks and recreation centers requires staying active and occasionally lifting 30 pounds of gear. Talking with kids aged 6 to 14 needs to be clear fun and full of positive energy . Keeping safety a priority while transporting groups and exploring new destinations is essential . Transforming a simple craft or game into the highlight of a childs summer takes a creative spark .

Must be 18 years old by time of hire

The hiring rate for this role is $18.00/hour.

This is classified as a VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee) meaning the selected candidate will work fewer than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leavein accordance withthe Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come first-served basis; as soon as we determine we have a qualified pool of applicants this position may close quickly and without notice.

** This job announcement is for collecting candidate applications for current and future Summer (Youth) Camp Leaders. Applicants will be contacted only when a position need isidentified and their qualifications match the positions needs. **

The selected applicant(s) will undergo the following conditions:

Position overview:

The City of Aurora is seeking Program Leaders to implement youth programs throughout the position also applies to candidates that are only able to work during the summer season or part of the year. Hired staff are asked for availability based on program dates and scheduling comes on a first come first serve basis.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Program Leaders will be responsible for running outdoor excursions with a group of youth.
  • Program Leaders will be responsible for directing lessons.
  • Program Leaders will be responsible for implementing games crafts and other activities.
  • Program Leaders will serve as role models and use positive youth development strategies in the workplace.
  • Program Leaders will assist in transportation to activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge skills and abilities may be considered.

Education:

  • High School diploma

Experience:

  • Must have at least (3) months (460 hours) of full-time or equivalent part time satisfactory and verifiable experience with school-aged children.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • None

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of youth development outdoor education nutrition and recreation programming for elementary and or middle school students. Familiarity with the rules and regulations of School Age Licensed Day Camp Programs.

Skills:

  • Experience working with youth from ages 6 to 14 and ability to plan programs.
  • Fluency in the Spanish language preferred but not required. Previous supervisory experience is preferred but not required.

Abilities:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees all levels of management including executive staff citizens and elected officials
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Direct and effectively supervise a diverse workforce
  • Creatively solve problems negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Reliable transportation to work sites and a valid drivers license.
  • This position will require the following certifications to be completed upon hiring. City of Aurora will maintain a copy of all certifications.
    • First aid and CPR
    • Standard Precautions
    • Medical Administration Part 1 and Part 2
    • Child Abuse Reporting
    • Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Immunization Course
    • Playground Safety
    • Injury Prevention
    • FEMA Multi-hazard Planning for Child Care

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Primarily physical and active work requiring the ability to lift up to 30 pounds; lifting carrying walking and standing; the vision for reading recording and interpreting information; frequent speech communication with fellow employees and City of Aurora citizens.

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in recreation facilities and outdoor parks and adventure destinations.

Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email internet Word Excel and menu driven databases
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle cell phone tools etc.) in the course of their employment

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16 April 10 July 2 and December 24.
