Environmental Technician 4 (EHS4714)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Provides wide variety of operational and administrative support for company environmental health and safety programs and policies. Carries out inspections audits and tests of safety and workplace hazard monitoring equipment and systems; records and escalates anomalies hazards and issues for resolution. Assists in Emergency Response Team (ERT) and employee training; maintains safety records manuals and documentation in accordance with established procedures. Supports ongoing safety surveys and investigations of incidents accidents and emergencies. Under limited supervision responsible for providing support to the chemical storage equipment wastewater treatment areas and the salvage control. Trains other Technicians and production staff.

REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED with associate degree in a related field preferred.
A minimum of 4 or more years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

5 years of environmental/industrial hygiene-related roles; certification preferred

Intermediate working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Excel Word PowerPoint etc).

Ability to walk climb stand and work in a variety of environments; may wear PPE for extended periods of time.

Must pass 24-hour HAZWOPER and forklift driver certifications within 6 months of hire.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Chemical Storage & Waste Operations

  1. Perform day-to-day operation of the chemical storage and waste areas in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
  2. Coordinate hazardous and non-hazardous waste pickups with disposal contractors.
  3. Receive chemical purchases and manage storage organization and categorization of chemicals.
  4. Move stage and manage drums and containers using approved material-handling methods.
  5. Print hazardous waste labels replace defaced or damaged labels and ensure proper container labeling.
  6. Support other departments with waste disposition and chemical handling needs.
  7. Maintain a safe orderly and clean chemical storage area waste pad and shared office space.
  8. Sign waste manifests.

Wastewater Treatment & Reclaim Systems

  1. Collect routine samples from the wastewater treatment plant and other non-routine samples as requested by senior EHS staff.
  2. Operate and maintain wastewater reclaim/reuse systems.
  3. Provide support for wastewater treatment operations and salvage control activities as requested.

Regulatory Compliance & EHS Support

  1. Assist senior EHS staff in ensuring compliance with federal state and local environmental regulations.
  2. Conduct routine self-inspections of chemical storage areas hazardous waste accumulation areas and satellite accumulation areas; document findings and track corrective actions.
  3. Assist with hazardous waste determinations and proper waste profiling under the direction of senior EHS staff.
  4. Support compliance with RCRA DOT SPCC and local CUPA requirements as applicable.
  5. Prepare for and participate in EHS audits regulatory inspections and property inspections.

Recordkeeping Data Management & Reporting

  1. Maintain accurate environmental records as directed by senior EHS staff and regulatory agencies including waste generation logs chemical usage records inventories onsite waste disposal and offsite waste transfers.
  2. Enter and maintain data in EHS management systems (e.g. waste tracking chemical inventory wastewater logs).
  3. Assist with preparation and submittal of data for regulatory reports (e.g. Biennial Report Tier II TRI wastewater reporting) under supervision.
  4. Report requested environmental data to senior EHS staff.

Vendor & Contractor Coordination

  1. Interface with waste disposal vendors chemical suppliers and service contractors for scheduling documentation and site access.
  2. Verify contractor compliance with site environmental and safety requirements while working in the chemical storage and waste areas.

Emergency Response & Spill Management

  1. Serve as a first responder for small chemical spills and releases in accordance with site procedures.
  2. Maintain spill response equipment and ensure emergency supplies are stocked and ready.
  3. Participate in emergency response drills related to chemical releases or wastewater incidents.

Waste Minimization & Sustainability

  1. Assist in identifying waste reduction recycling and chemical substitution opportunities.
  2. Support waste segregation improvements to reduce disposal costs and regulatory risk.
  3. Track waste generation trends and identify anomalies for review by senior EHS staff.

Training & Communication

  1. Train and support employees in effective environmental management practices related to chemical handling and waste management.
  2. Assist in onboarding new employees and contractors on chemical storage waste handling and environmental requirements.
  3. Communicate environmental requirements clearly to operations facilities and support staff.

Equipment Infrastructure & Physical Requirements

  1. Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance of chemical storage and waste infrastructure (e.g. secondary containment) emergency response equipment (e.g. spill kits fire extinguishers) eyewash/showers ventilation and sump systems.
  2. Identify and report equipment deficiencies or maintenance needs.
  3. Safely operate forklifts pallet jacks drum dollies and other material-handling equipment (with training).
  4. Perform work requiring lifting moving and positioning containers within defined weight limits.

Other Duties
