What is the COVE Internship Program


We are looking for bright talented individuals at the post-secondary level interested in the marine sector who are looking to gain valuable hands-on work experience. You will be placed with a host company in the marine sector and will be working on a core project for their business. Projects areinterdisciplinaryand students will be collaborating closely with other students and staff from different disciplines.

The COVE internship is a collaboration withnumerouscompanies that are leaders in the marine and marine technologysector. We are diligent in placing students in a role with a company that is well aligned with their discipline of study skillset and future career ambitions. Canadas marine sector is growing and thriving and contributes millions of dollars to our national economy on an annual basis. COVE is seeking interns who are Canadas best and brightest to be part of this phenomenal growth.

  • Internship Eligibility:
    • Open to post-secondary students across all disciplines (i.e.Environmental Sciences Statistics Engineering Computer Science Business Marketing and Communications etc.)
    • Students must be actively enrolled in a post-secondary program at the time of the summer internship
    • Based on the required skillsets placements are typically geared towards second-year undergraduate students and above
    • Collaborative self-starter
    • Open to learning
    • Have experience or an interest in the marine sector
    • International students must be eligible to work in Canada and have a valid study/work permit

The Opportunity:

The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) led by Dalhousie University is a global leader in interdisciplinary ocean in September 2015 OFI unites researchers industry and government to solve complex ocean problems.


What you will be doing:


The Data Quality Analyst Intern will join the Data Team and support the assessment and improvement of data quality processes for internal databases and ERDDAP data services. The team is responsible for collecting organizing and publishing scientific datasets and is actively strengthening its quality control framework.

In this role the intern will help identify data quality issues such as unit inconsistencies missing values and unexpected patterns and will assist in developing structured and increasingly automated approaches to data validation. This internship provides hands-on experience working with real world scientific datasets and data publishing workflows.

Data Quality Assessment

  • Perform exploratory and manual data quality checks to identify issues including unit inconsistencies missing or invalid values extreme values and formatting or metadata mismatches.
  • Create visualizations and summary statistics to support the identification and analysis of data quality concerns.
  • Document findings and communicate data quality issues to team members.

Data Exploration and Understanding

  • Develop an understanding of dataset structures variables and relevant scientific context.
  • Work closely with team members to learn how data is collected processed and published.
  • Apply basic scientific reasoning to assess whether data values are reasonable consistent and complete.


Process Improvement and Automation

  • Support the translation of manual quality control checks into repeatable workflows.
  • Assist in the development or improvement of Python based scripts or notebooks for automated data quality evaluation.
  • Contribute ideas for improving data validation methods and quality metrics prior to data publication.
  • Assist with the documentation of quality control procedures and best practices.


What you will bring:


  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in a relevant field such as Data Science Computer Science Statistics Marine Science or related discipline.
  • Foundational experience working with datasets through coursework laboratories or academic projects.
  • Experience using Python for data analysis.
  • Ability to perform exploratory data analysis and produce basic data visualizations.
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated interest in data quality and data reliability.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new tools technologies and concepts and apply them to real world data problems.
