THIS IS A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UNIT POSITION.

Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position:

Provides nursing care and patient education for the patient during radiation therapy treatment course at the Cancer Center. Assists with IV therapy for CT simulation. Models the BSMH values and incorporates the mission in care provided.

Essential Job Functions:

Performs direct patient care and implements the Radiation Oncologists order(s). Assesses patients prior to being seen by the physician. Documents and evaluates all patient related information such as weight vital signs and medications.
Assesses patients for special needs and plans appropriate nursing interventions: a) Skin reactions; b) dietary needs; c) social service needs and d) psychological needs. Communicates with patients via phone regarding acute situations then notifies physician and provides appropriate follow up to the patient.
Assures comprehensive patient care based on appropriate assessment planning implementation evaluation and education of the patient.
Provides support for patient education and orientation. Distributes site specific educational material to patient and family. The RN will provide the patient with information on what to expect during radiation treatments and follow up care.
Assists with special procedures and monitors patient conditions Provides IV therapy for contrast injection for CT simulation
Schedules patients follow-up visits off-site procedures and tests and notifies the business office. Prepares patient records for physician related visits prior to visit. Calls patient with test results under physicians direction. Maintains exam room supplies and appearance.
Assists in the coordination of inpatient transfers and consultations. Obtains hospital records needed for consultation for day of visit.
Serves as a liaison with other disciples: A) Social Services; B) Nutritional Services; C) Pain Management; D) Hospice; and E) hospital nursing units/departments etc.
Participates in performance improvement initiatives to continuously improve nursing care provided.

Patient Population:

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.

Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

Neonates (0-4 weeks) Adolescents (13-17 years)

Infant (1-12 months) Adults (18-64 years).

Pediatrics (1-12 years) Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Employment Qualifications:

Required Minimum Education: RN accredited facility for nursing education

Preferred Education: Diploma/Associates in Nursing

Licensure/Certification Required: Registered Nurse

Preferred: Oncology experience

Preferred: Oncology Certification through ONS
