What Youll Do
- Provides high level health physics technical support and guidance specific to waste/material management related activities to waste generators and to the site in general
- Support the Waste Management organization in performing waste characterization and disposal related activities
- Develops sampling plans performs health physics calculations and documentation required to perform the radiological characterization of waste and materials
- Reviews and approves NDA reports by understanding QA/QC requirements and identify anomalies; includes supporting NDA Operations within the Waste Management organization
- Interprets analytical data and performs complex health physics calculations for the purpose of identifying radionuclides of concern and relative activity/mass concentrations in waste
- Ensures requirements for waste transportation and waste acceptance for target treatment and disposal facilities are met
- Interfaces with waste generators at the Y-12 site and various other internal and external groups
- Develops procedures profiles and technical basis documents to support radiological characterization
- Participates in audits and assists in identifying and completing any corrective actions for radiological issues identified within the Waste Management organization

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelors degree in engineering/science discipline
- OR Masters degree in engineering/science discipline
- In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e. Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).DOE 426.2A Nuclear experience requirements can be satisfied following the interim newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2A)
Preferred Job Requirements
- Bachelors degree in health physics or other equivalent technical training (e.g. military)
- A general understanding of waste characterization treatment packaging transportation and disposal of waste generated at Department of Energy nuclear facilities is required
- A working understanding of health physics principles and calculations is required
- Strong technical writing and math skills are expected as development and review of technical documents is required
- Preferred Education and Experience: Candidates must have experience with interpretation of analytical data and performing complex health physics calculations for the purpose of identifying radionuclides of concern and relative activity/mass concentrations in waste; applicable requirements for waste transportation and waste acceptance for target treatment and disposal facilities must be well understood
- Interfacing with waste generators at the Y-12 site and various internal and external groups is required
- Understanding of the physics and capabilities for various non-destructive assay (NDA) systems; have the ability to review and approve NDA reports by understanding QA/QC requirements and be able to identify anomalies; includes supporting NDA Operations within the Waste Management organization
- Familiarity with waste management requirements of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) DOE Order 435.1 - Radioactive Waste Management DOE Order 458.1 U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and related Tennessee requirements

- Formal training related to radioactive waste management DOT RCRA Polychlorinated Biphenyls and Radiological Worker II is desired
- Candidate will spend 20% of time in support of field activities that will include climbing ladders and stairs with the balance performing administrative duties; occasional respirator use may be required
- Proven experience in performing radiological characterization to support DOE projects/mission objectives
- Previous experience in interpreting analytical laboratory and NDA reports
- Understanding of DOT and treatment/disposal facility acceptance criteria for radioactive and hazardous wastes
- Proficiency in performing high level health physics calculations
