Were looking for dedicated team-oriented and reliable individuals with a passion for customer service to join our seasonal workforce! As part of a crew youll take on a range of responsibilities including routine grounds keeping at Solid Waste facilities assisting with general upkeep operating a variety of light equipment cleaning up illegal dumping sites and roadside debris removal.

About the Job

Hours of work vary depending on which team you are assigned to. Groundskeeping hours are 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Litter Crew hours are 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Crews will be assigned on the first day of work.

There is a variety of work to be performed through spring summer and early fall. Employment timeframe is between April 1 2026 and October 31 2026. Duties may include:

  • Picking up trash from grounds and roadside
  • Sweeping raking and spreading mulch gravel and soils
  • Cleaning plugged outdoor drains and washing buildings traffic surfaces and equipment
  • Mowing edging weeding watering grounds and landscaping
  • Operating and maintaining a variety of light trucks and maintenance equipment
  • Flagging


Candidates should be comfortable working outside and working in a solid waste environment. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively orally via radios with co-workers leads and supervisors.

This seasonal position pays $26.81 per hour and is typically scheduled for 40 hours per week. You will be assigned to work at one or more of the Solid Waste county locations.

1. On-Line Application:

Complete and submit the on-line application. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for this position will move forward in the hiring process. The minimum qualifications for this position are: Must be 18 or older by start date have WA drivers license and have one (1) year experience in construction maintenance work or commercial gardening landscaping or yard care experience.Applicants will be hired in date order of application received.

2. Eligibility Register:

Applicants who pass the Minimum Qualifications will be placed on an Eligibility Register and then hired in order by the date their application was received. The Eligibility Register will expire on October 31 2026.

3. Professional Reference Checking:

  • For those candidates selected Public Works will contact three (3) professional references.
  • A professional reference is someone who has assigned and/or reviewed your completed work. Examples of acceptable professional references may include current or past supervisors/leads coaches tutors or teachers/ professors.
  • On your application under References include at least three (3) professional reference contacts and verify you have provided their current email address and phone number.References are notified using the email addresses provided in the Reference Section of your application.

4. Conditional job offers:

Washington State Department of Licensing Drivers Abstract:

  • Applicants will be emailed instructions on how to acquire and submit a current drivers abstract.

Criminal Background Check:

  • Applicants will be emailed a link to complete and consent to an online background check.

Physical Abilities Test (PAT) and Drug/Alcohol Screening - March 2026:

  • Applicants will be emailed instructions on how to schedule a required medical exam Physical Abilities Test (PAT) and drug and alcohol screening.

The PAT will include a drug/alcohol screening medical examination and Physical Evaluation Fitness Test performed by a qualified healthcare professional selected by Snohomish County. This is a laborer position involving a variety of routine manual labor tasks. This includes strenuous physical effort such as lifting objects weighing up to seventy-five (75) pounds. Because this job is considered safety sensitive a drug screen test will be required prior to employment.

5. Final offer and start date:

Applicants who have met all the requirements of the Conditional Offer will be emailed a Final Offer Notice. The Final Offer Notice will include detailed employment information and requirements for your hire date/new employee orientation. Please note per the collective bargaining agreement the start date must be on or after April 1 2026 and the end date must be on or before October 31 2026.

The Solid Waste division oversees the disposal of garbage hazardous materials and recycling throughout Snohomish County. With three full-service facilities and an additional four neighborhood and special items facilities the division is focused on:

Job Duties

BASIC FUNCTION

To perform routine grounds keeping and unskilled manual labor tasks assists in general maintenance work and operates a variety of light equipment as directed.

STATEMENT OF ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  1. Performs a variety of outdoor maintenance tasks such as sweeping raking picking up trash from grounds and roadside; cleaning plugged outdoor drains; pressure washing buildings traffic surfaces and equipment; shoveling and spreading mulch gravel and soils.
  2. Mows edges trims and water lawns.
  3. Weeds flower beds; trims trees and plants; waters and fertilizes a variety of flowers plants shrubs and trees.
  4. Operates mowers gas powered trimmers and blowers chainsaws vacuums and a variety of other small power tools.
  5. Operates a variety of single axle trucks rated to 10000 lbs GVW and less.
  6. Performs routine maintenance on assigned equipment by checking fluid levels and lubricating equipment as necessary.
  7. Picks up and delivers equipment materials parts and supplies as required.
  8. Paints with non-powered equipment from ground level or non-powered lifting devices under supervision.
  9. Completerecords and reports as necessary.
STATEMENT OF OTHER JOB DUTIES
  1. May perform a variety of routine cleaning tasks such as cleaning and stocking restrooms cleaning and waxing floors and setting up facilities for a variety of meetings and events clean up after meetings and events garbage and litter pickup.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year experience in construction and maintenance work OR one (1) year of experience in commercial gardening landscaping or yard care; OR any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Must pass job related tests.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • A valid Washington State Drivers License is required for employment.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR card within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain valid Flagger certification within ninety (90) days of employment.


Employment will be conditioned on satisfactory results of:

  1. A post-offer drug screen test a medical examination and a Physical Capacities Evaluation performed by a qualified healthcare professional selected by Snohomish County.
    Because this job is considered safety sensitive a drug screen test may be required prior to employment.

  2. A post-offer three (3) year drivers license abstract obtained from the Washington Department of Licensing.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
The work involves a variety of manual labor tasks requiring some strenuous physical effort such as lifting objects weighing up to seventy-five (75) pounds.
SUPERVISION
Employees report to Equipment and Vactor Facility Operator or other designated lead worker as assigned. The work is performed under general supervision and may be spot checked to ensure timely completion and compliance with instructions procedures and standards. Specific instructions are given for unusual or non-routine tasks.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather at work sites throughout the county. The work may involve working at considerable heights in confined spaces from ladders or scaffolding. Employees are exposed to a variety of hazards such as working near traffic around heavy equipment and are exposed to dust fumes hazardous chemicals and inclement weather.
