Description

The University of North Alabamas Department of Music invites applications for an Open Rank Faculty position in Music and Director of Bands. The Department of Music is a proud member of the UNA School of the Arts alongside wonderful colleagues from the departments of Cinematic Arts and Theatre Visual Arts & Design and Entertainment Industry. Located in the Shoals known for its rich musical heritage the UNA Department of Music cultivates musicians equipped to contribute to the world stage.

The preferred start date for this position is May 2026; however the start date is flexible and can be adjusted based on the selected candidates availability. Rank and salary will be commensurate with the selected candidates education and experience.

Essential Job Duties

Primary responsibilities include providing visionary artistic leadership for the band programs. Additional responsibilities include conducting the University of North Alabama Bandswith support from the Assistant and Associate Directors of Bandsincluding the Wind Ensemble Symphonic Band Jazz Band and Marching Pride.

Additional duties may include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in basic conducting; advanced instrumental conducting and literature; marching band techniques (including drill software); instrumental pedagogy for P12 levels; and other music education courses as needed.

Recruiting advising and mentoring students are essential components of the role as is serving as a liaison and resource to public school music teachers in the region. Service responsibilities include participation on departmental college and university committees as assigned. Other duties may be assigned by the department chair associate dean and/or dean of the college.

Minimum Qualifications

Required qualifications include: an earned doctorate in music from a regionally-accredited institution (or an internationally accredited/government-certified university); demonstrated experience with budget management; a minimum of five years of collegiate band teaching experience; demonstrated ability to develop curriculum in instrumental and music education areas; a demonstrated ability to recruit for the band program and the department; demonstrated experience integrating appropriate technologies (audio audiovisual and web-based) into rehearsals and courses; a record of peer-reviewed scholarship and/or creative activity appropriate to rank; strong written and verbal communication skills; a demonstrated commitment to professional engagement including participation in professional organizations and mentoring students through those organizations; and demonstrated commitment to collegiality and effective collaboration within the university and broader community.
