Job Summary

The autonomic lab technologist facilitates a battery of tests to measure the functioning of the autonomic nervous system. The technologist working alongside a neurologist will measure the heart rate and blood pressure of the patient who will be exposed to a variety of stimuli that are controlled by the technologist such as deep breathing active standing and passive head-up tilting on a addition the technologist will assist the neurologist in obtaining a sympathetic skin response test that will evaluate and record the galvanic response from the skin. The technologist will be responsible for preparing the patient for autonomic testing in the lab as well as providing explanations of what to expect prior to during and after testing. When the testing is complete the technologist organizes the data into a report.


Qualifications

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Explains each autonomic test component to the patient and ensures they understand what to expect during testing how to communicate during the test and why the test has been ordered. Sets up the autonomic lab with all necessary equipment and supplies prior to patient testing. Prepares patients for testing including setting patients up on a tilt table acquiring baseline EKG and blood pressure measurements performing sweat test measurements etc. Assists the neurologist during skin biopsy cranial doppler measurements and tilt table measurements per protocol or as needed. Facilitates each autonomic test and records observations in real time. Correctly places EKG leads and electrodes to acquire a diagnostically accurate EKG. Helps to maintain proper appointment scheduling in conjunction with the scheduling department. Provides patients with pre-appointment paperwork and responds to any patient inquiries prior to appointment date. Maintains proper supply levels and orders additional testing supplies as needed. Enters test result data into report. Sends out lab samples at the end of the day for processing. Adapts to workflow changes and plans as outlined by provider &/or Operations Manager as is necessary to a changing environment. Performs other duties as assigned by the Neurologist Operations Manager or Director of the department.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Understands EKG placement and function. Prior direct patient care experience Knowledge of basic medical terminology and clerical functions related to scheduling. Can set up and record accurate EKG tracings for patients during autonomic testing. Can enter data quickly and accurately. Can measure blood pressures manually or with a blood pressure cuff. Excellent interpersonal skills excellent written and oral communications with all departmental and hospital staff. Must be able to multi-task and think and act proactively.

EDUCATION:

Associates Degree or higher preferred

LICENSES CERTIFICATIONS and/or REGISTRATIONS

ABRET certification in Autonomic preferred

ABRET in EEG accepted

ACSM-CEP accepted

BLS required

EXPERIENCE:

Relevant clinical experience in Autonomic testing EEG testing or exercise physiology preferred.
