The Department of Family Practice within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the Northern Medical Program (NMP). This position will primarily be based at the distributed NMP site in Prince George BC at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) one of the UBC Faculty of Medicines affiliated institutions and as such the successful incumbent will be required to reside in Northern British Columbia.
The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Family Practice is dedicated to improving the health of the people of British Columbia. The Department provides leadership to train clinical faculty and stimulate and facilitate academic and community-based research and education that addresses the needs of communities. Our large complement of academic clinical and adjunct faculty members provides exceptional opportunities for partnerships and mentoring within the Department as well as a wide range of scholarly and interdisciplinary opportunities across the Faculty of Medicine and other UBC Departments. Faculty members within the Department of Family Practice conduct research that spans a wide scope from Aboriginal peoples health to the prevention of chronic disease to social epidemiology midwifery and maternal care health services systems and policy research.
The NMP is a distributed site of UBCs Faculty of Medicine MD Undergraduate Program delivered in partnership with UNBC. The NMP is focused on training physicians from and for northern and rural communities in alignment with the social accountability principle of the UBC Faculty of Medicines strategic plan. Along with the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program the Island Medical Program and the Southern Medical Program this distributed medical program was the first of its kind in North America and has proven to be a highly successful model of distributed education.
Reporting to the Head of the Department of Family Practice and in consultation with the Regional Associate Dean Northern BC this position will be expected to work collaboratively with other physicians and faculty members to advance the education research and partnership needs for excellence and innovation in primary care and rural health in Northern BC. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the teaching activities of the Department of Family Practice as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate graduate (NMP) and postgraduate learners in Northern BC for Family Medicine. The incumbent will also be expected to provide service to the University (UBC and/or UNBC) and the broader academic and professional community. They will work collaboratively in diverse groups to bring forward strategic initiatives for the Department and the Faculty of Medicine. The successful candidate will contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect integrity compassion collaboration and equity. Equity diversity inclusion and justice are essential to academic excellence as well as to fostering an inclusive community for voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged.
The successful candidate will hold an MD and will also be eligible for registration and licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. A PhD would be considered an asset. The ideal candidate will have expertise in primary care and rural health research with a focus on Indigenous and/or rural communities. Expertise in clinical epidemiology data science and integration of emerging technologies would be considered an asset. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching and scholarly activity. Clinical and/or research experience and knowledge dissemination with the potential to make a significant contribution to primary care in rural communities is addition the successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to respect diverse perspectives including perspectives in conflict with ones own and a commitment to enhancing ones own awareness knowledge and skills related to equity diversity and inclusion.
