Job Summary

Athletic DirectorBurr and Burton Academy (BBA) a public-serving independent high school of approximately 800 students in southern Vermont seeks an Athletic Director to lead a comprehensive mission-driven athletic program rooted in education-based athletics. BBA believes athletics are an extension of the classroomdeveloping leadership character resilience teamwork and belonging. This is an opportunity to lead a program with strong momentum excellent facilities and a community that believes athletics matter because students BBA Athletic ProgramBBAs athletic program supports 54 teams in 38 sports across three seasons including both traditional and emerging sports. Roughly 70% of students participate in athletics with many competing in multiple seasons. The program emphasizes broad participation alongside competitive excellence and has benefited from significant investment in facilities leadership development and inclusive programming including Unified Sports. BBA competes under the Vermont Principals Association and is a member of the Southern Vermont League. BBA is recognized as a Special Olympics Banner School and most recently received the 2025 Quality Program Assessment Award as an Exemplary Athletic Program from the Athletic Director is first and foremost a leader of people. This position requires steady leadership strong judgment and the ability to guide a community of students coaches parents and colleagues. The Director oversees all aspects of the athletic program while ensuring strong alignment with BBAs mission and well-being healthy competition and education-based decision-making are central to all aspects of the responsibilities include: > Leading and stewarding a comprehensive education-based athletic program. > Recruiting mentoring evaluating and supporting coaches through clear expectations and ongoing feedback. > Fostering a culture of leadership inclusion sportsmanship and student well-being. > Overseeing athletic operations including scheduling facilities transportation budgeting compliance and risk management. > Serving as a visible and engaged presence at practices competitions and school events. > Problem-solving and communicating clearly and calmly with students families coaches colleagues and community partners. > Collaborating closely with school leadership and seeks a candidate who:Believes deeply in education-based experience leading adults in complex environments (athletic administration and/or coaching experience preferred).Demonstrates strong judgment emotional intelligence and calm presenceespecially in moments of strong organizational skills with relational comfortable honoring tradition while shaping the next chapter of BBAs athletic program.A bachelors degree is required; an advanced degree and athletic administration credentials are and Burton Academy is committed to fostering a diverse equitable and inclusive community and encourages candidates from all backgroundsespecially those excited by complexity collaboration and purpose-driven leadershipto candidates should submit a cover letter and resumé to Jamaica Kaercher Administrative Assistant to the Headmaster and the Associate Head of School at interviews will commence the week of February 9 2026.
