Job Description

The Department of Political Science in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada Reno invites applications for a 12-month renewable non-tenure-track (NTT) Lecturer/Teaching Assistant Professor in American Politics or American Public Law who will coordinate its Collegiate Academy (High School Concurrent Enrollment) program.

The Concurrent Enrollment Coordinator position allows for a maximum of 50% of total effort to be devoted to administering semester-long high school concurrent enrollment courses with a maximum of 75% of total effort for yearlong concurrent enrollment courses.

Collegiate Academy(C.A.)is a dual credit program offering high school students the opportunity to earn college credit. The applicant who fills this position will be responsible for serving as the front-line contactand instructorfor participating high school teachers working in liaison with UNR and K-12 administrators and conducting in-person visits in classrooms across the state of Nevada as well as in-person and virtual meetings with participating high school teachers and others involved in the program. The Concurrent Enrollment Coordinator plans a summer workshop and professional development day for participating high school teachers. Additionally this faculty member will actively recruit C.A. high school students to the Political Science major at UNR.

This faculty member will have a standard 4-4 teaching load. As Concurrent Enrollment Coordinator they will have a 1-3 teaching load (1 Fall/3 Spring) in Political Science in line with their teaching interests and departmental needs with the remaining 3-1 courses dedicated to the C.A. workload with the understanding that the C.A. Political Science course is normally taught in the Fall. This faculty member will typically teach Introduction to American Politics and possibly a graduate seminar for participating Collegiate Academy high school teachers. The successful candidate will be able to teach other courses in American politics with a focus on political institutions. We would welcome the ability to teach courses in public policy and/or public law.

Non-Tenure Track faculty are eligible for merit increases and promotions to higher ranks within the NTT faculty ladder. The faculty member will be evaluated by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for their duties related to the C.A. program. The remaining duties will be evaluated by the Political Science Department Chair.

Required Qualifications

  • MA/MS in Political Science or Public Policy or appropriately related discipline with an emphasis in American Politicsrequired for Lecturer

  • PhD in Political Science or Public Policy or appropriately related discipline with an emphasis in American Politics required for Teaching Assistant Professor

  • Demonstrated excellence or clear evidence of potential for excellence in teaching in the field of American Politics

  • Experience teaching or demonstrated potential to teach introductory and upper-division courses in American politics at the university level

  • Knowledge of or experience teaching in U.S. high schools

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Political Science or Public Policy

  • Administrative experience

  • Demonstrated excellence or clear evidence of potential for excellence in teaching in the field of public law or public policy

Travel Requirements

This position requires travel throughout the state of Nevada in support of the Concurrent Enrollment Program

The UNR Department of Political Science is an energetic collegial and exciting community of political scientists and public policy and administration scholars with a deep commitment to excellence in research and teaching as well as to leadership in the Department University and diverse Northern Nevada community. The Department currently has 14 tenure/tenure track faculty and one teaching assistant professor. It is home to three graduate programs that confer MA MPA and PhD degrees. It offers a B.A. and B.S. in Political Science coordinates the International Affairs major and offers various minors.
