Theapplication deadline is February 15 2026 at midnight A Resident Assistant (RA) supervises the activity of a designated area within a residence hall under the direct supervision of a Head Resident Assistant (HRA) and ultimately reports to the Director of Housing. The RA is responsible for creating a sense of community among residents enforcing University policies and collaborating with residence hall staff. RAs report to campus three weeks prior to the start of Fall 2026 semester and the position runs until a week after commencement in May 2027. RAs are held to a very high standard of character and should conduct themselves in a manner befitting the visibility of this position. - In lieu of direct compensation RAs receive full room and board benefits including:
- Single or super single room or efficiency apartment in an on-campus residence hall
- 19 meal plan per week during the academic term
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES Resident Engagement - Be visible and available to both residents and fellow Resident Assistants
- Establish and maintain relationships with residents and fellow RAs
- Facilitate mediation during resident conflicts
- Encourage participation in university-sponsored programming and use of university resources including tutoring counseling and other services
- Organize social and educational programming for residents of your designated area at times in collaboration with fellow RAs
- Assist HRAs and Director of Housing with office-led efforts regarding programming safety and other issues
Administration of Residence Hall - Follow and enforce all residence hall/student conduct policies in accordance with the Student Handbook
- Assist HRA in opening and closing of residence hall and maintenance of university property
- Participate in a regular duty rotation with fellow RAs
- Report issues for concern to the HRA
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings
- Attend monthly professional develop trainings with all staff
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours per term) in any University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Completion of at least 24 college-level credit hours by time of appointment.
- Understanding of the Residence Hall Code and Community Code
- Ability to communicate effectively with others
- Ability to collaborate with other residence hall staff
- Maintain appropriate behavior both on and off campus
- Knowledge of CPR and first aid techniques (learned during training if not credentialed)
- International agency students are not eligible to serve as Resident Assistants
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS - Normal office working conditions and associated physical demands.
- Occasional exposure to blood bodily fluids and tissue.
- Occasional interaction among unruly students.
- Occasional evening/weekend/summer work.
- Regular requirement to sit stand walk talk hear see read speak reach stretch with hands and arms crouch stoop kneel and climb.
- Lift carry push and pull various items up to a maximum of 50 pounds.
