Job Title: Medical Technologist
General Summary of Duties: The Medical Technologist performs professional laboratory work following established clinic procedures and performs laboratory tests on patient specimens for medical diagnosis.
Supervision Received: Reports directly to Laboratory Technical Supervisor.
Typical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent walking sitting bending and standing required for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
Typical Working Conditions: May have exposure to communicable diseases biohazard substances medicinal preparations and other conditions common to medical environment.
Examples of Duties: (This may not include all of the duties assigned.)
- Assists the clinic physician in making a medical diagnosis by accurately performing and reporting all in-house laboratory testing procedures.
- Identifies and labels specimens correctly.
- Reports STAT and critical results to the provider or MA.
- Enhances the efficiency and accuracy of lab testing by maintaining adequate laboratory supplies by keeping equipment in operational condition and by maintaining a clean and orderly laboratory work area.
- Assists in the preparation of monthly statistical reports for analyzer QC.
- Communicates effectively with office staff
- Maintains quality assurance of the Laboratory by performing proficiency testing.
- Enhances professional growth and development though in-service meetings and education programs.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and professional conduct in the presence of our customers.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA and CLIA standards and any other regulations or guidelines for the clinical setting.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and protected health information (PHI) in a manner consistent with HIPAA.
- Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of respect for and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
- Performs related work as required
Performance Requirements:
Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform routine and stat blood and urine tests. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks. Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients and medical staff. Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions. Ability to follow written protocols. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to communicate clearly in writing or verbally. Able to effectively communicate through the telephone system when reporting critical results.
Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in a health-related or scientific field is required; a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology is preferred.
Experience: One year experience as a clinical Medical Technologist is required; two years experience is preferred.
Skills: The ability to develop knowledge of respect for and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
License: Must hold a Florida State License as well as be certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists.
