Job description

Bioinformatician Position in Molecular Oncology - Development of AI-Driven Analysis Tools and Multimodal Classifiers for Liquid Biopsy Data

There is a growing demand for robust generally applicable data analysis pipelines that can be deployed across different clinical settings while accounting for tumor-specific characteristics required for accurate analysis. To address this need we are seeking an enthusiastic bioinformatician to implement existing and develop novel liquid biopsy analysis pipelines thereby enhancing the clinical impact of biomarker testing. You will collaborate closely with experts in liquid biopsy testing and bioinformatics and play a crucial role in the adoption of liquid biopsy testing in future cancer diagnostics.

Liquid biopsies particularly the detection of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) have revolutionized molecular cancer profiling and are expected to play a critical role in diagnostics in the near future. An increasing amount of biomarker data is being generated containing more clinically relevant information than is currently being utilized.

At the Netherlands Cancer Institute we are compiling extensive databases of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and biomarker data across a wide range of cancer types (e.g. lung breast and ovarian) for diverse clinical applications. These applications span screening and early detection minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring and surveillance as well as treatment response prediction and monitoring.

Your role

You will be responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing analysis pipelines for whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data obtained from large research cohorts

  • Developing multimodal classifiers and detection tools for cancer diagnosis and monitoring

  • Analyzing peptide and protein mass spectrometry data for cancer risk prediction and detection

  • Analyzing longitudinal liquid biopsy data to evaluate treatment response dynamics

Job requirements

As a bioinformatician you will play a key role in developing novel analysis pipelines for ctDNA and biomarker data to advance clinical care for patients with cancer. Ambition motivation and creativity are essential qualities for driving this project forward. Furthermore the right candidate should have:

  • Strong programming skills (preferably in Python and R)

  • Solid understanding of machine learning and artificial intelligence and preferably experience in molecular oncology

  • Experience with large-scale databases data processing and data management

  • Ability to work independently as well as in multidisciplinary teams to advance molecular ctDNA data analysis and deepen your understanding of oncology principles with a focus on whole-genome sequencing (WGS) protein data analysis and the development of multimodal classifiers.

Your development opportunities and employment conditions

The basis for your employment conditions is in accordance with the CLA Hospitals. You will receive from us:

  • A years contract for 36 hours hours per week with the possibility of extencion;

  • A gross monthly salary between 3.164- and 4.261- based on a 36-hour working week in line with FWG45v and depending on your experience (in accordance with the CLA of February 2026);

  • 144 holiday hours and 57 hours of Personal Life Budget with full-time employment;

  • Annual holiday pay of 8.33% and a fixed end-of-year bonus of 8.33%;

  • A travel allowance of 0.23 per km;

  • Free parking at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. And with our bicycle plan and discount on public transport we also make it attractive for you to leave the car at home;

  • A great opportunity in a specialised hospital where you can also continue to learn and grow yourself if you wish: the AVL Academy offers innovative and inspiring education in the field of oncology professional knowledge skills and personal development;

  • Opportunity to exercise during working hours at our Fit Boutiqs;
