ISP Nurse Role Profile

Purpose of Role

The School Nurse is responsible for promoting and protecting the health safety and wellbeing of students and staff within the school environment. The role provides immediate medical care health education preventive services and supports the schools safeguarding and wellbeing frameworks. The School Nurse works closely with school leadership teachers families and external healthcare providers to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment.

ISP Nurse Key Responsibilities

Student Health Care

  • Provide first aid and nursing care to students during the school day.
  • Assess monitor and respond to acute and chronic health conditions.
  • Administer medications in accordance with medical prescriptions parental consent and school policies.
  • Maintain individual health care plans for students with specific medical needs (e.g. allergies asthma diabetes).

Health Promotion and Prevention

  • Promote healthy habits hygiene and wellbeing among students.
  • Support health education initiatives related to nutrition mental health and personal care.
  • Assist in implementing preventive health measures including infection control protocols.

Safeguarding and Wellbeing

  • Identify and report health-related safeguarding concerns in line with school safeguarding policies.
  • Work collaboratively with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and pastoral teams.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information in accordance with data protection regulations.

Communication and Coordination

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with parents or guardians regarding student health concerns incidents and follow-up care.
  • Liaise with teachers administrators and external healthcare providers when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date health records for all students.

Compliance and Documentation

  • Ensure compliance with school policies health regulations and professional nursing standards.
  • Keep detailed records of medical incidents treatments administered and communications.
  • Support audits and inspections related to health safety and wellbeing.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Respond effectively to medical emergencies and activate emergency protocols when required.
  • Support the development and implementation of emergency response and evacuation plans.
  • Participate in health and safety drills and trainings.

Ensure compliance with safeguarding health and safety policies and institutional procedures.

Skills Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
  • High level of professionalism discretion and ethical conduct.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary school team.
  • Cultural sensitivity and a child-centered approach to care.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) qualification with a valid professional license.
  • Degree or diploma in Nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Additional training in pediatric school or community nursing (desirable).
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection principles (preferred).

Experience

  • Previous experience working as a nurse preferably in a school or pediatric setting.
  • Experience managing chronic conditions and administering medications to children.
  • Experience in health record management and incident documentation.
  • Experience working collaboratively with families educators and healthcare professionals.
  • Experience supporting health and wellbeing initiatives in an educational environment (desirable).
