Scope:

The Sustainability team within the Global Technical Innovation Group (GTIG) is responsible for delivering the CooperVision sustainability strategy for operations considering carbon plastic and waste impact from product design to consumer post use.

The group is responsible for delivery of the companys sustainability portfolio including 2030 decarbonization commitment and this role will be fundamental in supporting the organisations delivery of technical changes.

The Principal Sustainability Engineer will be a Global Subject Matter Expert in sustainable materials product and process design considerations for CooperVision.

Job Summary:

The role holder will be responsible for the investigation assessment development and feasibility delivery of product and process design opportunities to support the business in achieving its sustainability ambitions.

This is a principal engineering position with full responsibility for the development and supply of state of the art solutions working globally alongside project teams and functional business units to deliver sustainable economically viable and compliant solutions. The role is also responsible for educating the business on its environmental footprint and improvements therein.

This position will be the lead SME for major sustainability transformation programs over the mid to long term horizon for CooperVision operations.

As a medical device manufacturer CooperVision is committed to the ongoing development and effectiveness of their quality management systems. Meeting statutory and regulatory requirements are of utmost importance throughout the business and must be considered in all designed solutions.

Essential Functions & Accountabilities:

  • Perform as the global lead technical SME for the decarbonisation programme delivery for supporting the business resources in delivery of the agreed changes.
  • Perform as the lead technical SME for development workstreams such as waste plastic water and biodiversity to support the organisations broader sustainability objectives.
  • Manage/review change control activities including managing Engineering Change Orders (ECO) Risk Management processes.
  • Lead the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) activities for CooperVisions products and design changes including software development legal and regulatory acceptance and claims management.
  • Lead the education of multifunctional teams in the generation of sustainability risk assessments initial change assessments and completion of all identified mitigation activities in accordance with the LCA outputs.
  • Maintain an expert knowledge of new developments in industry and environmental regulation translate into possible uses/implications for CVI and develop policies and procedures for the organisation.
  • Perform research into solutions to address sustainability engineering challenges and introduce best in class methodologies to support eco design considerations.
  • Develop and deliver training on sustainability practices for CooperVision as required.
  • Develop and deploy policies aligned to the relevant QA/RA and or strategic governance principles.
  • Raise and manage capital expenditure.
  • Run projects to the agreed project management standard.


Travel Requirements

The role involves travel within the UK and internationally approximately 10 to 20%.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Technical Competencies

  • Excellent understanding and practical interpretation of CO2e assessment in accordance with GHG and ISO 14067.
  • Excellent understanding and applied knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment and GHG Reporting environmental or ecological design.
  • Excellent computational and analytical capability and visualization with experience in data systems/platforms to support statistical analysis and controls.
  • Excellent capability in research and analysis and a depth of experience in the application of different approaches to our existing production technologies. An awareness of other relevant technologies on the market will be beneficial.
  • Excellent understanding and applied knowledge of manufacturing processes and the related supply chain and quality control processes of a regulated medical devices company.
  • Excellent understanding and practical knowledge of Quality Assurance and Quality Control systems medical device/pharmaceutical FDA ISO and International regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent understanding and practical knowledge of where and how measurement systems are used for quality/process.

  • Ability to lead influence and educate in area of expertise internally and with existing and prospective suppliers.
  • Structured with strong planning & organisation skills and high attention to detail.

Work Environment

Experience and Education

  • 3-5 years experience in a related industry and job role.
  • Key experiences implementing or embedding LCAs decarbonisation plans or other significant sustainability initiatives at a manufacturing organisation.
  • Relevant Degree or Equivalent qualification in Technical (Engineering to Scientific) discipline with focus on Sustainable Design.
