ABOUT THE POSITION



The Riverside County Sheriffs Office is accepting applications for Sheriffs Service Officer I to support the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio.


Under general supervision performs a variety of support services maintenance tasks and supply and record keeping activities for the Riverside County Sheriffs Department; and performs other related duties as required.

The Sheriffs Service Officer II class differs from the Sheriffs Service Officer I class in that the latter requires closer supervision while performing the duties and the former possesses six months of experience working in a law enforcement facility.

A Sheriffs Service Officer (SSO) is differentiated from a Community Services Officer (CSO) in that the SSO performs routine support activities that may require knowledge in a specific/limited area but do not require extensive training and knowledge of multiple regulations ordinances and codes. SSO incumbents may perform some of the same duties of a CSO; however these duties are performed at a County/City facility and under the supervision of a county employee unlike the CSO incumbent who would perform these duties independently in the field without on-site supervision.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Supervise trustees work release and labor program workers in performing routine vehicle and facility and grounds maintenance; ensure vehicles are cleaned inspected maintained and serviced in order to meet the operational needs of the facility; maintain records of trustees work release and labor program workers hours.

Maintain the working order of a wide variety of equipment including safety equipment emergency equipment weapons radios radar equipment and security cameras and send out or pick up and deliver equipment for repair or adjustments as needed.

Enter track and maintain various equipment inventories logs or other departmental records; maintain storage areas store rooms and inventory for facilities vehicles and equipment; order pick up and stock assigned forms supplies and other necessary items such as keys gas credit cards license tags and plates; arrange vehicle painting; install department decals on vehicles; maintain records on vehicles concerning mileage registration repairs and related requirements; ensure vehicles have necessary supplies and equipment such as trauma kits and fire extinguishers; conducts quality control inspections of vehicles.

Perform background checks/investigations for permits and licenses; fingerprint the public; fingerprint photograph process and register identified members of the public such as drug sex and arson registrants and suspects as mandated by law.

Take phone calls concerning background inquiries internal civil and criminal issues furnish information to the public and authorized law enforcement personnel over the telephone or at a counter in accordance with established departmental policy; write documenting reports; perform front counter duties at stations or bureaus; receive or prepare deliveries of equipment supplies and other materials.

Enforce vehicle code parking regulations at a City/County facility by issuing warnings or citations for illegal parking; assist motorists and advise the general public of County parking regulations and parking violation procedures; report irregular circumstances to on-site law enforcement staff; appear in court to give testimony relative to citations.

Process a variety of police reports by reviewing for complete and correct information resolving errors or obtaining missing information from deputies; gather background information on persons or property such as arrest record outstanding warrants stolen or recovered property etc. for use in further investigations.

Enter and retrieve on-line confidential law enforcement information; send messages over law enforcement data systems by computer terminal; process traffic citations and vehicular traffic incident reports; sort citations to appropriate courts; review citations for correct reporting code vehicle code section court date and time; obtain drivers license and driving record history from Department of Motor Vehicles.

Transport vehicles laboratory specimens supplies new or surplus equipment; transport evidence and other items as required to various locations including the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Assist sworn or forensic personnel with evidence collection entry into ELEETS system (Law Enforcement Evidence Tracking System) and storage of evidence.

May be tasked with the scheduling and tracking of training for station personnel completion of registration paperwork and arranging temporary housing transportation and per diem for personnel undergoing training.

May perform specialized routine functions such as the cleaning repair assembly and disassembly of equipment scheduled equipment maintenance and preparing computer equipment for delivery or disposal.

May assist with facility inspections maintain compliance of facility-specific logs and conduct monthly log audits.

Perform facility-specific tasks as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent (e.g. GED).

Experience: Six months of experience working in a law enforcement facilityin a volunteer reserve or employee status. *If applicable this experiencemustbe included in your resume/application*

Knowledge of:Community structure and the relationship of law enforcement service to the community at large; correct written and verbal usage of the English language; basic mathematics; laws procedures and precautions related to the safe operation of vehicles.

Ability to:Develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees vendors and the public; effectively oversee inmates; safely control and maintain the security of assigned trustees work release and labor program workers; understand interpret and apply basic laws rules regulations and law enforcement policies and procedures; follow oral and written instructions.

This classifications rate of pay will be set in accordance with California Senate Bill 525 requirements for applicable departments.
