This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workday. The NC Department of Insurance trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.

For more information about NCDOI: Purpose of the Position:

Investigation And Adjustment of All Losses to State-Owned Property Insured Through the State Property Fire Insurance Fund and the Public-School Fund.

When a final claim is submitted to the SPFIF or the PSIF the Proof of Loss and other supporting documentation will be scrutinized for completeness accuracy and appropriateness and to determine if the amount requested is consistent with the damages and the anticipated remedy. When necessary Specialist will engage the services of building or electrical inspectors engineers architects or other specialists to assist in the claims effort.

Employee will serve as a resource to state agencies universities community colleges and participating public schools by guiding them through the claims process advising them of ways to expedite the handling of their claims providing information on specialized cleaning and repair facilities acting as a mediator with other insurance companies etc. The Loss Control and Claims Specialist may also assist agencies upon request on an advisory basis for claims that are not covered by the SPFIF or PSIF.

When losses involve the States reinsurer or other insurance companies the Specialist will coordinate investigation and adjustment activities with the claims adjuster of the company and arrange for loss payment or the absence of the Director of Risk Management the Loss Control and Claims Specialist may present losses to the Council of State for approval.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge skills and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

Management Preferences:

  • Working knowledge of insurance principles and practices and department regulation.
  • Working knowledge of commercial property insurance claims.
  • Working knowledge of mathematics with some knowledge of the fundamentals of statistics.
  • Working knowledge of insurance rate-making procedures and practices policy contract and manualprovisions or insurance company operations.
  • Possession of professional designation appropriate to specialty area. (Ex FLMI CPDU CIC CIE AIE MHP etc.).

Minimum Education and Experience

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelors degree in business or economics or a related program from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in policy and rate examinations underwriting claims adjusting work or financial/marketing analysis; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
