Job Summary

This position involves fire suppression emergency medical services (EMS) inspections fire prevention and pre-planning activities relating to the fire department. The firefighter participates in daily activities including routine maintenance and cleaning of apparatus equipment and fire stations. Shall participate in training programs designated by the fire department and perform related work as required by the Fire Chief and the Pueblo West Metropolitan District.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Duties include (but are not limited to) driving apparatus in all weather and traffic conditions in a safe manner assist in the protection of life and property by controlling hazardous situations layout and connect hose lines control nozzles and direct water streams position and climb ladders use power tools various tools relating to fire prevention and extinguishment tasks ventilate burning buildings and perform rescue and salvage operations. Respond to emergency medical calls and hazardous materials incidents special rescue incidents and auto accidents including entrapments. Shall be competent with water supplies and fire hydrant operations. Knowledge of basic hydraulics fire streams and fire ground operations.
  • Assist with public relations and fire prevention programs including routine fire inspections school functions and fire/EMS pre-planning. Participate in training programs designated by the fire department for the continuous improvement of firefighter and EMS education.
  • Be advocates promoting health and safety in the workplace.

Other Duties

  • Shall assist in department record keeping including but not limited to EMS reports fire reports (NFIRS) training records department statistics and other necessary records.
  • General station maintenance including housekeeping mopping cleaning lawn maintenance and other general work.
  • Assist with programs designed for the improvement of fire department operations to include hydrant maintenance ladder maintenance and apparatus equipment checks and minor repairs.
  • Assist with inventories and notify station captains or chief officers of the need for equipment or supplies necessary for department operations.
  • Provide assistance to resident firefighters in training on apparatus and routine response issues promoting completion of task books during probationary period.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge

  • Have the ability to read comprehend and apply a variety of fire suppression prevention inspection and emergency medical materials and information.
  • Have the ability to learn and apply a variety of firefighting and EMS job performances and methods.
  • General geography of the Pueblo West community.

Skills

  • Candidates should have the ability to learn and successfully perform a variety of fire suppression prevention inspection and emergency medical operations.
  • Have the ability to use and operate motorized and non-motorized equipment and apparatus.
  • Comprehend and apply methods and duties related to the use of firefighting equipment to include being proficient in engineer pump operations.
  • Work as part of a team with the general public to positively promote the mission and core values of the fire department and Metro District.
  • Use of a keyboard and utilize fire department and district computer software.

Abilities

  • Exercise independent judgment and maintain emotional stability in emergency situations.
  • Must possess physical ability to perform firefighting in hazardous environmental conditions.
  • Must work well as a team with fellow firefighters and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate with the public to speak and write clearly.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education training and experience that provides the above knowledge abilities and skills may be substituted.)

Minimum Education

  • High school diploma G.E.D. or equivalent.
  • College degree or credit hours in fire science emergency medical services or emergency management preferred.
  • Wildland Firefighter I or II preferred.

Minimum Experience

  • Desirable qualifications include a minimum of 12 Months experience as a volunteer or career firefighter. EMS certification at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level or currently enrolled in an EMT education program. Completion of the program is a condition of continuous employment. Paramedic Certification preferred.
  • Documentation of a minimum of Firefighter I preferred.
  • At the discretion of the Fire Chief candidates may be considered with a current EMT certification without Firefighter I or proof of firefighter I and be currently enrolled in an EMT program. Completion of a Firefighter I academy or the EMT program is a condition of continuous employment.

Licenses or Certificates

  • Firefighter I completion with appropriate documentation.
  • Current Certified EMT in the State of Colorado or National Registry.
  • Completion of Hazardous Materials Operations level or above.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Colorado class R drivers license.
  • Failure to obtain or maintain any required license or certificate may be reason for disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a full-time shift work position working 48 hours on duty and 96 hours off duty.
  • Position is subject to additional shifts overtime shifts and mandatory overtime shifts.
  • Subject to mandatory emergency recall while off duty.

Special Requirements

  • The candidate should be able to reason and react quickly and calmly in emergency situations or incidents involving personal danger extreme emotional challenges and unusual conditions.
  • Pass a rigid physical ability test which demonstrates the candidates ability to perform firefighting emergency and non-emergency duties including heavy labor at all hours of the day and in all weather conditions.
  • Must show proof of valid CPAT and/or proof of passing an approved fire department physical
    ability test no more than one (1) year old from date of written test.
  • No person shall pose a direct threat to themselves or to the health and safety of other individuals in the work place or to the public they serve.
  • Outside employment is allowed however must be disclosed to the Fire Chief or designee and is determined not to interfere with District employment. Any outside employment can in no way interfere with the performance of the employees duties related duties or responsibilities and employment must be performed outside the employees approved work schedule and off District property. Requirements of employment with the fire department shall have priority over outside employment.
  • Physical ability to perform all evolutions of fire hazardous materials and EMS duties.

Physical Demands

  • Maintain physical ability and stamina to meet position tasks and responsibilities. Physical abilities must be commensurate with the essential functions of the position.
  • Dual vision is required: 20/20 minimum natural or corrected in both eyes and have minimum peripheral vision of 700 in both eyes. Frequently uses peripheral vision to observe and monitor conditions such as equipment fire weather conditions as well as drive motor vehicles. Constantly is required to differentiate shapes distances and sizes of objects people and animals.
  • Repeated bending crouching sitting standing stooping walking heavy lifting and/or climbing.
  • Twisting/Turningat the waist and neck.
  • Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking standing stooping lifting digging pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unusual Demands

  • Work is subject to stressful situations and demanding duties; Firefighters are subject to mandatory overtime and recall for emergency incidents and situations when off duty. Must have the ability to work at any time required and may be required to work beyond normally scheduled work hours.
