The Sociology Gender Studies and Criminology programme is a vibrant multidisciplinary unit forming the largest academic group in the School of Social Sciences Division of Humanities at the University of Otago. Our Criminology programme has a critical criminology focus that we are looking to expand. To build on our success we are seeking to appoint a Lecturer to join our team in mid-2026. This is a full-time permanent position.

The role Te mahi

We welcome applications from candidates with a demonstrated focus in criminology and/or criminal justice. The successful candidate will teach within the Criminology curriculum and contribute to the wider programme. On commencement the candidate will be expected to contribute to introductory and core criminological theory time the successful candidate will be encouraged to develop new undergraduate and postgraduate courses aligned with their area of expertise.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an active programme of research and publication. To support the strong postgraduate research culture within the Programme they will supervise postgraduate dissertations and addition the candidate will contribute service to the Programme School University and wider communities.

The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a strong disciplinary grounding in Criminology with the capacity for high-quality teaching research and service. They will have:

A doctoral degree in Criminology or related discipline.
Demonstrated strong record of research publications in criminology.
Demonstrated experience and ability in delivering high-quality teaching.
Ability to contribute to the development and growth of the Criminology major.
Demonstrated experience with postgraduate supervision and/or mentorship.
Willingness to support the other disciplines in the programme Sociology and Gender Studies through occasional teaching and supervision.
Demonstrated ability to work with students and staff from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution.
Commitment to upholding the Universitys core values related to support and success of Māori and Pacific students aligned with the Universitys Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework.

The appointment range for this role is $97377 to $114943 per annum.
