Job Summary

Subject to formal establishment a vacancy may arise for a Flight Lieutenant (Aircrew Flying Pilot (Any)) to serve as SUAS QFI at MOD Boscombe Down on Volunteer ex-Regular Reserve Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS) with an initial proposed start date of 27 July 2026.

6 FTS is the largest and most diverse military flying training school in the country. From its HQ at RAFC Cranwell the school manages a broad range of flying tasks from Elementary Flying training on University Air Squadrons to the provision of Air Experience Flying (AEF) for the Air Cadet Organisation. 2 AEFs working week is flexible to meet the needs of business challenges.

Delivery of air and ground instruction for ab-initio aircrew as well as conversion and currency training for experienced aircrew on the AEF. Additionally you will be working as a member of a small team and be required to undertake a range of secondary duties associated with the supervision of flying and the management of the Squadron including line management of the AEF staff. Furthermore in addition to your duties with the AEF but within the terms and conditions of VeRR you will be required to carry out those duties associated with a commissioned officer of your rank. Specifically you will be required to:

  • Prior to taking up your post you may be required to attend 115 Sqn at RAF Wittering during your employment you will be required to attend Standards Flight (RAF Wittering) every 2 yearsfor routine flying standardisation. Furthermore attend CFS standardisation every 2 years (alternate years to Standards Flight).
  • Undergo training and maintain currency for the following: Flying Supervisors Course; Human Factors / Error Management; Aviation Medicine Training Wing; Defence Train the Trainer; and attend the Short Interview Technique Course.
  • Assist in the delivery of ground training to Regular Service i.e. MA (ISR) UAS and RAF Air Cadets
  • Delivery and monitoring of student flying progress and administration of student flying records and documentation.
  • Supervise SUAS and 2 AEF flying and ensure that it is conducted safely and in accordance with applicable military and civilian flying regulations.
  • Liaise with cadet units air traffic control and the aircraft engineers to achieve efficient planning and programming of flying.
  • Oversee all personnel following the principles contained within the 6 FTS and OC SUAS Supervisory Care Directives (SCD).
  • Authorize SUAS and 2 AEF sorties in accordance with 22 Gp ASOs 6 FTS TFOs and the Powers of Authorization issued by the Aviation Delivery Duty Holder (ADDH).
  • Maintain currency as an authorizer in accordance with 22 Gp ASOs.
  • Proactively manage air safety IAW the 6 FTS Air Safety Management Plan (ASMP) and take appropriate action in the event of any transgressions of flying regulations.
  • Carry out additional duties as required by OC SUAS.
