Join our Parks and Recreation team and help keep Oahus parks beautiful safe and welcoming for the community.

The Department of Parks and Recreation Park Maintenance & Recreation Services Division is hiring for the following positions:
  • Park Caretaker II (BC-04) located at Kakaako Regional Park (1 vacancy)
  • Park Caretaker III (WS-04) located at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park (1 vacancy)
These positions play a key role in keeping City parks and recreation facilities safe functional and visually appealing for the public through maintenance repairs and grounds care.

What You Will Do
The following are general descriptions of the duties for each level:

  • Level II -$4672/month (BC-04):
    • Perform hand-son groundskeeping landscaping and facility maintenance including mowing planting pruning minor repairs and cleaning.
    • Operate light motorized equipment and provide information to the public.
  • Level III -$5001/month (WS-04):
    • Perform all Level II duties
    • Plan and execute landscaping or maintenance operations.
    • Supervise staff provide training and guidance and evaluate staff performance.
    • Oversee more complex repairs and equipment maintenance.
  • Perform other related duties as required for the position.

Special Work Requirements

  • Work schedule is from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with varying days off.
  • May be required to work weekends nights and holidays.
  • Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Level II & III:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in manual labor and semi-skilled tasks involving the care maintenance and beautification of landscaped areas; performance of semi-skilled or skilled building or mechanical trades experience; and operation or repair of passenger and/or tractor type mowers.

Key Competencies and Skills Needed:
Level II & III:

  • Knowledge of plant identification care and cultivation including shrubs flowers trees and lawns.
  • Knowledge of common methods and materials used in building and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to perform grounds an facility maintenance including operation and repair of tractor-type mowers hand tools and light powered equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions maintain safety practices and provide courteous service to the public.
  • Ability to make simple oral and written reports

Additional for Level III:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and work planning.
  • Ability to assign review and oversee the work of others.
  • Ability to detect and address turf and plant diseases and implement appropriate control measures.
  • Ability to plan and execute more complex building and grounds maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to keep detailed records prepare reports and enforce rules and regulations effectively with staff and the public.


LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
The following are required prior to appointment:

  • Valid drivers license (Type 3)
  • Obtain from City Health Services during the pre-employment medical examination:
    • DOT Medical Examiners Certificate
    • Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) test

All required licenses and certifications must be maintained on a current basis during the course of employment in the position.
