The leadership team recognises that early years behaviour often reflects underlying emotional or developmental challenges. With a growing number of pupils requiring additional support across Nursery Reception and Key Stage 1 the school has invested in robust pastoral systems behaviour mentoring and SEND provision.
The Behaviour Mentor will support children experiencing difficulties with emotional regulation social interaction behaviour for learning or engagement in school routines. Pupils may present with SEMH needs ADHD ASD attachment difficulties or developmental delays affecting social and emotional skills.
You will act as a consistent calm and trusted adult supporting children in classrooms small group interventions and during unstructured times such as play and lunch. By nurturing relationships and implementing structured strategies you will help pupils develop self-confidence resilience and social skills.
Deliver 1:1 emotional and behavioural support for pupils with additional needs
Lead small group interventions focusing on social skills self-regulation and emotional literacy
Support pupils within Nursery Reception and Key Stage 1 classrooms
Assist with daily transitions routines and coping strategies
Support behaviour management during playtimes lunchtimes and other unstructured periods
Implement behaviour support plans and monitor pupil progress
Use play-based restorative and trauma-informed strategies
Model positive behaviour and emotional regulation for pupils
Observe assess and record pupil behaviour and report outcomes
Contribute to planning review meetings and multi-agency discussions
Build strong professional relationships with parents and carers
Work collaboratively with teachers EYFS staff SENCO and pastoral teams
Uphold safeguarding and child protection policies consistently
Promote a school culture of empathy inclusion and respect
The ideal candidate will be compassionate calm and emotionally resilient with a genuine passion for supporting young children. You will understand that challenging behaviour is often a form of communication and respond with patience consistency and positivity.
You should demonstrate:
Experience working in Primary Nursery or EYFS settings
Knowledge of SEND SEMH ASD ADHD or attachment-informed practice
Confidence delivering behaviour interventions and tracking outcomes
Strong interpersonal communication and teamwork skills
Emotional resilience and reflective practice
A proactive flexible approach in a dynamic school environment
Qualifications in childcare education psychology youth work or mental health are desirable but not essential.
