If you are looking for a rewarding career please consider the opportunity to apply for the Correctional Sergeant I position located at Craggy Correctional Center. Located in beautiful Asheville NC. Craggy Correctional Center is a minimum and medium custody facility in Buncombe County with approximately 182 minimum and 408 medium security custody male offenders.

Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer Is in minimum-custody facilities increasing the custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Position must oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody security and welfare of offenders is maintained. Position arranges work schedules to ensure shift coverage implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may at times be the highest-ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report to a Correctional Captain I and/or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent.

Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulation and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders. Gives directions during drills searches and in emergencies. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments. Responds to emergency situations searches for escaped offenders and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders their living quarters and work areas for contraband. Investigates and takes action where appropriate regarding security issues incident disputes and complaints. Prepares other duties as required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Management Preferences:

  • Working knowledge of the overall operation of correctional facilities.
  • Working knowledge of various policies procedures rules and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is NC07. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
