Job Summary

Description

Hawaiian Monk Seal Program Casual Hire would be responsible for:

  • Maintaining cleaning and disinfection protocols
  • Proper diet preparation for resident Hawaiian monk seal
  • Exhibit maintenance
  • Interacting with the public interns and volunteer staff
  • Behavioral enrichment and training
  • Veterinary procedure participation
  • Maintaining current events board and signage
  • General Record keeping
  • Assisting Head Trainer in training sessions


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Experience (at least 1 year) in the husbandry and training of marine mammals.
  2. Ability to work at least10 hours a week including weekends and all required holidays. Availability requires Fridays Saturdays and Wednesdays depending on HMS pool cleaning needs per your immediate HMS supervisor. Ability to add a day throughout the week in order to improve training with immediate HMS supervisor. Must be able to work flexible working hours.
  3. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in a relevant field of study.
  4. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation write reports and procedures and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team members and individuals.
  6. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and useword processing database and spreadsheet programs.
  7. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for the purpose of transporting equipment food stuffs and materials to service facilities or animals on site and off site.
  8. Ability to work in all weather conditions
  9. Ability to wear a respirator
  10. Able to work at heights in confined spaces and use ladders.
  11. Ability to travel independently to and from meetings events and WAQ in a timely manner fulfilled by possession of a valid Drivers License (Class 3) or use of other means of transportation which meets position needs.
  12. Experience at giving educational presentations to the public and/or conference presentations.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Experience supervising one or all the following groups: staff students and volunteers.
  2. Experience maintaining freshwater and/or marine fishes and invertebrates at a zoological park aquarium or aquaculture facility.
  3. Considerable knowledge of life support systems.
  4. Certified SCUBA diver or AAUS Scientific Diver
