Responsible for the safe and cost effective operation of the Lumber Yard and Kiln operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
In conjunction with departmental Manager is responsible for the safety and work performance of 25 to 30 team members engaged in activities associated with kiln operations lumber receipt grading stacking inventory management & reporting
- Drives improvement ideas from concept through development justification and implementation
- Initiates and participates in a cooperative efforts with the Lumber Buyer for the plant toward assuring that vendors are meeting lumber specifications and that these vendors are being given accurate information with regard to the delivered footage grade and overall quality of their products
- Directly responsible for assuring that all supervision and team members in the Kiln/Yard departments understand and follow the requirements of safety processes
- Responsible for conducting all accident investigations in Kiln/Yard operations and development/implementation of corrective actions for any contributing factors
- Determine optimum conditions and procedures necessary to provide a continuous supply of high quality lumber to the manufacturing operations
- Monitors the performance level of team members in meeting departmental stretch goals: (communicates expectations solicits feedback to assure understanding establishes measurement criteria and monitors performance to expectations)
- Initiates actions to include training counseling and or disciplinary procedures or praise/recognition as appropriate. Assures that all disciplinary is properly documented.
- Must follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as required in the Yard operations; communicates SOPs to team members and in conjunction with departmental supervision assures that procedures are followed consistently
- In conjunction with Yard Manager determines feedback necessary to help suppliers understand their performance with regard to meeting quality standards and specifications grade committed to lumber shipments pack counts etc.
- Adheres to Kiln operation schedule and ensures proper processing and movement of lumber
Qualifications To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - 3 years of production supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment
- Strong management and leadership skills with the demonstrated ability to effectively lead and motivate a diverse group of employees
- Excellent working knowledge of safety and environmental practices and regulations including safety compliance
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal
- Willingness and ability to work hours as needed
- Bachelors degree preferred
- Previous project management experience preferred
- Experience with Lean manufacturing Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies
- Solid mechanical knowledge including machine operation troubleshooting and preventative maintenance
- Experience working in a union environment
