Description of Work

This is an anticipated vacancy.

This position reports to the Assistant District Engineer for District 2 in Jackson County. Applicant should have knowledge of the principals and practices of Civil Engineering and highway maintenance methods techniques and the use and operation of field and office engineering instruments. This position is responsible for the in-depth review and processing of but not limited to technical plans and drawings relating to driveway permit applications preliminary sites plans utility and non-utility encroachment requests subdivision design standards and road addition/abandonment for the counties of Haywood Jackson and Swain. This position will schedule and conduct on-site inspections for compliance with NCDOT specifications and standards conduct pre-construction meetings and meet with utility representatives contractors property owners and others to discuss adherence to NCDOT policies and procedures. Applicant hired into this position must have the ability to read and interpret construction plans provisions specifications and perform inspection procedures. This position will answer questions and address complaints from the general public by telephone written correspondence or in person. This position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergencies and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces. Applicant will assist the District Engineer with other tasks as assigned. Applicant should be experienced using computers and electronic tablets/iPads and able to adapt to changes in technology. Applicant must possess the ability to work independently to make engineering decisions. Applicant must possess good communications skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers contractors personnel and the general public.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC11: $43738.00 $76542.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience planning developing scheduling tracking and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans
  • Experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts practices and theories used in construction construction inspection and/or construction surveying.

Additional Expectations:

Employee may be exposed to high traffic volumes work at heights over water or traffic and climbing on the substructure and superstructure of be able to work traverse rough and steep terrain. Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds. This position may require a varied work schedule with possible nighttime and weekend hours. Work includes emergency situations nights and weekends. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
