The Mental Health Therapist provides assessment short-term counseling ongoing counseling referral and follow-up service to individuals couples children families and groups. Work in inpatient ambulatory practices or Employee Assistance Program (EAP)/patient companies).
The responsibilities of the Mental Health Therapist include but are not limited to the following:
No supervisory responsibilities or duties. Orients new employees and may provide guidance to unlicensed therapists volunteers students support or contract staff. Requires close communication with counselors clinical staff community agencies employers and treatment facilities. Accesses enters and/or updates confidential information. Appropriately shares and makes decisions based on this information as a regular responsibility of the job. Provides input into budget and cost containment initiatives. Work is generally performed in an office environment and involves sitting standing or walking. Light effort is required to carry boxes office supplies or use light tools. May be exposed to infectious diseases bio-hazardous materials and combative patients. Varied and complex work is performed under general guidance in patient care environment and is often fast-paced requiring use of prioritization skills. Focus of counseling is to intervene with a bio-psycho-social philosophy for maximum benefit to patients whole person. Accountability to resolve issue as determined by license. Erroneously exercised judgments regarding interpretations of compliant behavior may have negative effects on the organization (i.e. reimbursement human resources clinical pathways). Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development. Must provide own transportation and may be required to travel to other Carilion work sites to meet staffing needs.
Education: Masters Degree in Behavioral Sciences from an accredited university required.
Experience: Two years - Five years of experience in the mental health profession.
Licensure/Certification: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Psychologist (LCP) or RN CNS required. LSCW preferred.
Other: Part of interdisciplinary C/L Team. Interfaces with patients on medical floors and ED. Provides assessment triage counseling. Facilitate admissions or outpatient referrals.
