SUMMARY

The Police Telecommunicator Trainees (911 Call Takers) are responsible for answering calls and inputting the information in applicable databases at the CMPD emergency response center. Calls are received from the public regarding crimes disturbances fires and medical or police emergencies. Maintaining contact with the caller until appropriate responders arrive may be needed.

Must be able to work nights weekends holidays and report to work during emergency and disaster events including inclement weather.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive & transfer incoming telephone or alarm system calls to appropriate department
  • Enters deletes verifies and queries criminal justice information system data on behalf of law enforcement agencies; communicates pertinent system information to officers and agencies over phone as well as over the radio.
  • Performs call back on disconnected calls
  • Determine nature and location of issue and required services; and enters information in system as needed.
  • Determine response requirements & relative priorities of situations
  • Record details of calls / messages
  • Maintain access & security of highly sensitive materials
  • Scan status charts maps and computer screens to determine emergency units available for dispatch
  • Observe residential & commercial alarm registers
  • Pass and maintain applicable certifications
  • Read & effectively interpret small-scale maps to determine locations and/or provide directions
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Sheriffs Standards Telecommunicator Certification (must be completed within one year from appointment)
  • Must be a United States citizen

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of customer service principles
  • Knowledge of techniques & methods for organizing prioritizing and monitoring work
  • Knowledge of telecommunication system operations
  • Knowledge of proper grammar and spelling of the English language
  • Knowledge of administrative & clerical procedures and systems such as stenography & transcription
  • Ability to verbally obtain and relay pertinent & timely information
  • Ability to utilize multiple computer and software applications simultaneously
  • Ability to audibly detect or tell differences between sounds varying in pitch & loudness
  • Ability to assess response needs and prioritize communication tasks
  • Ability to retain and recall information such as words numbers pictures and procedures

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require grasping talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Remaining in a stationary position often sitting or standing for prolonged periods
  • Occasional movement throughout the workday daily to interact with staff and accomplish tasks
  • Communicating both verbally and in writing to exchange information
  • Repeating motions of holding grasping turning that may include the wrist hands and/or fingers
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying
  • Work primarily in office environment
  • Ability to operate office equipment such as computer copier fax machine and phone

Sensory Requirements:

  • Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual audio and other sensory modalities) for proofreading data entry tabulating data.
  • Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises which in return could result in some level of stress fatigue or strain.
  • Comprehend written information in work-related documents.
  • Ability to hear understand and distinguish speech.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions moderate exposure to environmental conditions and frequent exposure to computer screens files and phone.

Other Requirements:

  • Successfully complete and pass applicable pre-employment evaluation(s). Failure to successfully pass all segments of the pre-employment evaluation process will result in disqualification from further consideration under this vacancy announcement.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The Citys Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes but is not limited to: reference checks social security verification education verification criminal conviction record check and if applicable a credit history check sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidates written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process candidates may be asked to take a skills test and/or participate in other assessments.
