SUMMARY

Join the award-winning Fleet Management Division of the City of Charlotte as an Associate Diesel Technician and become part of a team that keeps one of the regions most advanced municipal fleets running strong. Youll work alongside a dedicated group of ASE-certified Medium/Heavy Truck technicians supporting essential services for both the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.
In this entry-level role youll take the lead on the daily evaluation inspection diagnosis and repair of heavy trucks sanitation equipment and construction equipment. The Associate level technician is primarily responsible for lube oil and filter change safety inspections tires North Carolina State Inspections preventive maintenance services hydraulic system repair brake work and maintenance and repair of various types of municipal equipment. This is an entry level position and will include mentoring with a journey level technician for a period of time.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspects diagnoses and performs general heavy truck repairs.
  • North Carolina State Inspections
  • Lube oil and filter service
  • Completes work orders using fleet maintenance software to document work performed.
  • Assist in determining functions faults and needed service or recommend repairs.
  • Interprets manuals electrical diagrams and diagnostic software and translates findings to assist with the repair of equipment.
  • Understanding and following safety procedures is critical with the ability to assess potential safety hazards.
  • Maintains a safe/clean work environment.
  • Demonstrates the ability and knowledge to identify specific parts operate tools and equipment needed to provide service.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the methods tools and materials used in diagnosis and maintenance of heavy trucks and other equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and the ability to exercise adequate safety precautions against such hazards.
  • Desire to learn and expand knowledge of the heavy truck and equipment industry and Fleet Management.
  • Ability to effectively be part of a team.
  • Works in organized clean and safe manner.
  • Analyze evaluate and effectively write diagnosis and recommendation of work being performedto complete work orders.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to pass background and motor vehicle license check.
  • Ability to work holidays some weekends and overtime.
  • Ability to travel out of town for training on occasion.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. of equipment and/or tools.
  • Must have or obtain the following licensures within 6 months (180) days of hire:
  • NC Inspection LicenseAC Recover and Recycling License
  • Must have within one year of hire::Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL)
  • Must have basic hand tools and tool storage upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or certification from an accredited technical school or college.
  • Manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The Citys Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes but is not limited to: reference checks social security verification education verification criminal conviction record check and if applicable a credit history check sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidates written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process candidates may be asked to take a skills test and/or participate in other assessments.
