Job Description:
Specialty Registered Nurses: 2 FTE Chemo & 2 FTE Psych
Experience:
- All contract personnel will have a minimum of two-year direct patient care experience within the last three years in the field.
- All Chemotherapy Infusion Registered Nurses shall have at least a minimum of 2 years experience (must have worked within the last six months) performing immunotherapy and/or chemotherapy on patients in an Infusion Suite.
- All Mental Health Inpatient Psych Registered Nurses shall have at least two (2) years of experience in a mental health setting exclusive of agency assignments and must have worked within the last six (6) months in the above settings.
Computer Literacy:
- The contract personnel shall have the knowledge and ability to use computers and other technology
Mental Health Inpatient Psych Registered Nurse (RN). The Mental Health RN is a professional nurse who provides holistic approach to the care of the patients requiring mental health treatment in the inpatient Acute Psychiatric Units. The Mental Health RN will be responsible for the delivery of quality age specific healthcare; for utilizing sound clinical judgement to ensure positive patient outcomes for Veterans. The RN assesses plans implements supervises teaches evaluates and documents patient care; serves as an integral member of the treatment team; and is responsible for helping to produce a therapeutic environment and plan of care to promote optimal health status. The Mental Health RN may provide periodic coverage for 3a Inpatient Psych. The Nurse functions both dependently and independently with guidance and direction from the Nurse Manager/designee
- Contractor nurses will be assigned based on patient care needs and contractors experience.
- Agency nurses assigned to Charleston VA Inpatient Psych unit can expect to work 12-hour shifts with alternating weekend shifts preferred.
- The Contract Mental Health RN is a highly skilled professional who can work independently to optimize patient care patient safety and operational efficiency for patients that are admitted to the Behavioral Health Recovery Unit (BHRU).
- Inserting and maintenance of peripheral lines
- The Mental Health RN is responsible for direct patient care within the behavioral health inpatient unit and facilitates the appropriate plan of care.
- Accompany and/or transport patients to appointments/procedures as necessary.
- The Contract Mental Health RN is expected to care for a population of male and female Veterans ranging in age from young adult age 18 to the elderly age 65 and older and managing patient care promoting positive patient outcomes including areas of assessments: Mental Health Nursing Assessment and the Clinical Institute Withdrawal of Alcohol Scale.
- He/she is expected to manage care by promoting positive patient outcomes including the areas of medical and psychiatric emergencies detox (withdrawal symptoms) and patient safety.
- Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care patient and family education patient self-management after discharge and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.
- Complete and accurate documentation of care according to facility/unit policies
- The Contract RN possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to their age-specific needs providing care as necessary and influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.
- May be required to work with COVID 19 positive patients and Patients Under Investigation (PUI) for COVID 19
Chemotherapy/Infusion Registered Nurse (RN).
- The Chemotherapy Infusion Registered Nurse (RN) under the supervision of the nurse manager the Chemotherapy/Infusion staff nurse maintains accountability for the coordination and delivery of care to patients requiring immunotherapy and/or chemotherapy within the Infusion Suite.
- The RN will provide care based on to individuals families and groups based on the standards of the American Nursing Association and Oncology Nursing Society.
The responsibilities of the Infusion/Chemotherapy staff nurse include:
- Contractor nurses will be assigned based on patient care needs and contractors experience.
- He/she identifies physiological psychological social and environmental variables affecting the functional status of the chemotherapy/infusion patient.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the various staged of adult and geriatric patients in the Chemotherapy/Infusion Suite.
- The Contract Chemo/Infusion RN assesses monitors and treats patient response to antineoplastic and/or immunotherapy treatments and hematology/oncology related health problems.
- Able to function effectively in an emergency and/or during an infusion/transfusion reaction. Proactively intervenes to prevent complications.
- The Contract Chemo/Infusion RN can assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to their physical emotional and age-specific needs.
- Provides care as needed and as outlined in medical center policies related to administration of antineoplastic and immunotherapy treatment.
- The Chemo/Infusion RN is responsible for administering monitoring documenting and evaluating interventions and treatments provided in the Chemotherapy/Infusion Suite and/or related to hematologic/oncologic related problems.
- These interventions may include: Airway management/provision of BLS appropriate use of AED venipuncture access and management of Port-A-Cath and PASport implanted devices as well as peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) devices interpret laboratory values transfusion of blood and blood components and safe management of chemotherapy spills 12 Lead electrocardiographic monitoring tracheostomy care gastrostomy/PEG tube care indwelling and/or intermittent urinary catheterization administration of high alert medications and/or immunotherapy and any other medications or treatments administered in the Chemotherapy/Infusion Suite.
- He/she is responsible for reviewing patients electronic/paper records for orders as appropriate and administers immunotherapy and/or chemotherapy -related intra-venous and/or oral medications as prescribed and/or per protocol.
- Assumes responsibility for developing teaching plans based on individualized patient needs discusses patient concerns and answers questions relevant to care.
- Plans and implement interventions that promote health enhance patient stability and prevent complications with the goal of achieving and maintaining optimal patient response.
- Plans alternative interventions for Chemotherapy/Infusion Suite patients with unique needs.
- Documents findings of patient assessments and interventions utilizing approved VA forms and/or computerized programs and advise providers of any significant change in the patients condition and other pertinent information.
- The Contract Chemo/Infusion RN performs other treatments and diagnostic tests such as blood sugar testing and other tests required as part of patient treatment.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of immunotherapy and/or chemotherapy laboratory tests/results medication and/or drugs.
- The Contract RN possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to their age-specific needs providing care as necessary and influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Provides patient education/teaching applicable to the patients medical condition and refers patient to other disciplines or services as needed (nutrition social work etc.).
- Medication management to include administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy agents in accordance with the Oncology Nursing Society guidelines blood products iron antibiotics and intravenous fluids.
- Works closely with others on the Chemotherapy & Infusion team and participates in interdisciplinary team meetings.
- Acts in adherence to standards of nursing care I accordance with ethical principles.
- Maintains responsibility for providing coverage to the Chemotherapy & Infusion center.
- May be required to work with COVID 19 positive patients and Patients Under Investigation (PUI) for COVID 19.
Operating Room Registered Nurses (RNs)- 3
- shall have at least three (3) years of current experience in an operating room setting exclusive of agency assignments and must have worked within the last six (6) months in the above settings.
- Current CPR certification through an American Heart Association (AHA)

QUALIFICATIONS:
Staff/Facility:
- Contract personnel shall be licensed in a State Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
- Contractor Personnel Requirements/Specifications: The Contractor shall ensure that all contract personnel meet the qualifying criteria outlined in this section.
- Registered Nurses (RNs) & Nursing Assistants (NAs): All Nurses & assistants must have certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by an American Health Association vendor. Personnel must be able to demonstrate competency in providing CPR and have current basic life support (BLS) certification. Critical care Nurses shall have advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certification.
- Licensure: The contract RNs must have a current license in at least one state territory or commonwealth in the US or the District of Columbia. Proof of current license must be provided five business days prior to their first shift and at the licensure renewal rate. This also applies to all other required certifications.
- Certification: The Contract RNs assigned to the Chemo Infusion Clinic is preferred to have completed the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) and competency requirements outlined in the Dimensions of Nursing Practice. The minimum requirements is having completed the Oncology Nursing Society Fundamentals of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration Course.
Education Requirements:
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Bachelors Degree in Nursing or in related field or a masters degree in Nursing or in related field is highly preferred.
Hours of Operation:
- The services covered by this contract shall be furnished by the Contractor as defined herein.
- The Contractor shall be required to furnish such services on national holidays and during off-duty hours.
- The Contractor will ensure responsibility for all employees reporting to designated unit as scheduled timely and that each contract employee document timecards accurately reflecting working hours.
If attendance requirements are not met or if fraud/falsifying documents/timecards are discovered may result in removal from the assignment/contract. - Contractor will replace contract staff within 48 hours.
- The following terms have the following meanings:
14.1. Workdays a normal workday will be consistent with those of the Medical Center
14.2. Work hours are those hours in which a contractors employee is physically present at the Medical Center in performance of the required services. Normal work hours for Nursing services typically include:
