Job Summary

Summary

Tool room trainees will assist tool and die makers and supervisor with operations of machines to produce precision metal parts and components to exact specifications. Trainees review the part specifications drawings and requirements and work primarily supervised to complete the task and/or fabricate parts by performing the following duties.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the reading and reviewing of blueprints part specifications engineered drawings customer provided drawings manuals and sample parts for machined and/or fabricated parts with special focus on die components in order to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece sequence of operations and setup requirements.

  • Assist with determination of the sequence of steps to follow in production of the product and plan the production process including where and how to cut the work piece the correct tools and materials for the job.

  • Assist with the development of specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated when required.

  • Learn how to Measure using proper equipment mark and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.

  • Operates all equipment necessary to support the tool room

  • Learn steel inventory (different types)

  • Press dies in cases Select align and secure holding fixtures cutting tools attachments accessories and materials on machines such as mills lathes jigs borers and grinders.

  • Assist with calculating and setting controls to regulate machining factors such as speed feed coolant flow and depth and angle of cut or enter commands to retrieve input or edit computerized machine control media.

  • Starts and observes machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

  • Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications.

  • Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.

  • Confers with tool and die makers engineers programmers CNC machinists header operators thread roll operators supervisor and management as well as others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
