The Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Janelia Research Campus is a pioneering research center in Ashburn Virginia where scientists pursue fundamental questions in the life sciences. About the Role:

Advanced imaging techniques at HHMI Janelia Research Campus produce large amounts of image data that require at-scale analysis to extract useful information about the biological structures or animal behaviors. The PTR-Bioimage Analysis team within Project Technical Resources (PTR) collaborates with the initiative Team Projects and Janelia laboratories to provide ground truth data and analysis support for a broad spectrum of projects. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with strong scientific interest and background in 3D/4D image analysis to manage these projects and technicians in the PTR-Bioimage Analysis team. This role is ideal for somebody with strong collaborative and organizational skills who wants to engage in cutting edge science and also enjoys guiding and developing others.

What Youll Do:

  • Project management for multiple efforts including coordination of timelines tracking progress organizing training resources maintaining shared project materials.

  • Apply and gain further in-depth knowledge of using commercial (e.g. Amira Webknossos) and custom annotation software (e.g. Paintera).

  • Contribute to data production by collecting relevant data from 2D 3D or 4D images.

  • Perform computer automated analysis and quality control on large data sets.

  • Liaise effectively with other groups at Janelia to manage multiple image analysis projects supported by PTR including timely and effective reporting to stakeholders.

  • Manage a group of PTR technicians involved in annotation projects working closely with the Senior Manager of PTR.

What You Bring:

  • PhD degree in the field of biology/biomedical imaging or computer science.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in the areas of image acquisition image processing and computer-assisted image analysis.

  • Intermediate level programming skills.

  • Good organizational skills for project and people management.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate efficiently with team members and collaborators.

  • Work experience in a team-oriented environment and skills to be a good team player.

  • Interest in engaging in ground-breaking research in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

  • Some leadership and supervisory experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). This position also requires:

  • Good color vision

  • Ability to visualize in 3D

  • Ability to sit for several hours at a computer or microscope (with breaks)

  • Fine motor skills

Compensation Range

$105778.90 (minimum) - $132223.62 (midpoint) - $171890.71 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Annual

HHMIs salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidates education previous experiences knowledge skills and abilities as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
