The Opportunity
The City of St. Johns is presently accepting applications for the Full Time Permanent position of Mechanical Systems Operator reporting to the Manager - Infrastructure in Water & Wastewater Division Public Works Department.
Accountabilities
Under the direction of the Foreperson Water and Wastewater Division the following duties apply to various pumping stations meter stations emergency diesel power systems valve chambers and other associated facilities.
1. Operate and maintain and repair various water and wastewater pumps electric/pneumatic equipment mechanical screens pressure reducing valves air compressors vacuum pumps fans shafts mechanical couplings various mechanical drives diesel engines valves piping mechanical seals and hot water heating systems.
2. Perform preventative maintenance programs on plant equipment.
3. Perform basic gas welding cutting safe rigging and housing operations.
4. Safely use and maintain shop tools and equipment.
5. Carry out inspections and keep records of operations.
6. Pick up water samples for analysis.
7. Use a computer or mobile device to document maintenance and monitoring tasks.
8. Perform Confined Space Entries in manholes and chambers for water and sewer equipment.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. The above statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job identified and shall not be considered a detailed description of all work requirements that may be inherent in the job.
Qualifications
1. Must possess an Interprovincial Journeyperson Certificate in the field of Millwright and have a minimum of five years experience. Applicants must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to effectively perform maintenance and repairs to various water and wastewater equipment and systems.
2. The successful applicant must obtain certification as Class I Water Distribution Certificate (AWWA) or Class I Wastewater Collection (AWWA).
3. As a condition of employment in this position applicants who do not possess both of the required AWWA Class I certifications (Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection) must enroll in the first available course(s) for which they are eligible after gaining the necessary job experience in accordance with provincial regulations.
4. Be and continue to be medically certified to be able to safely wear a respirator as a condition of being offered the position and continuing to be employed in the position. Candidate must provide medical certification that they are able to safely wear a respirator as a condition of being awarded the position. The candidate must also provide medical certification medical certification that they are able to safely wear a respirator when required by the employer. Failure to provide such certification shall result in the employee being required to leave the position in that event the employee shall offered options as per the Collective Agreement.
5. The employee shall be clean shaven while employed in the classification.
6. The successful applicant must possess a valid Class 5 Drivers Licence.
Hours of Work
Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm; Shift work as required.
