Description of Work

Provide academic instruction for middle and high school students who are deaf and hard of hearing in their primary mode of communication within a residential education setting. This position is responsible for fostering an inclusive and effective learning environment tailored to students unique needs providing direction and coordination of assigned education programs.

Recruitment Salary Range:
$40000 to $54285 - Dependent on qualifying education and relevant experience.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:
* Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and lesson plans aligned with state standards and student needs specializing in instruction for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
* Utilize American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication modalities to effectively convey curriculum content and facilitate student understanding.
* Assess student progress regularly provide constructive feedback and adapt teaching strategies to ensure academic growth and achievement.
* Collaborate with parents interpreters therapists and other educational professionals to support a holistic approach to student development.
* Maintain a safe structured and stimulating classroom environment conducive to learning and social-emotional growth.
* Participate in professional development opportunities relevant to deaf education ASL proficiency and instructional best practices.
* Manage student behavior using positive reinforcement and appropriate disciplinary techniques consistent with school policies.
* Prepare and maintain accurate student records progress reports and other required documentation.

Management Preferences:
* Bachelors degree in Education Deaf Education Special Education or a related field from an accredited institution.
* North Carolina teaching license or eligibility for licensure in Deaf Education or a related area.
* Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required; ASLPI Level 3 or higher preferred.
* Demonstrated knowledge of deaf culture deaf education methodologies and communication strategies for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
* Experience working with school-aged deaf or hard-of-hearing students is highly desirable.
* Strong classroom management skills and the ability to create an engaging learning atmosphere.
* Excellent communication interpersonal and organizational skills.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

About the North Carolina School for the Deaf:

The North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) is a specialty school for Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students ages 3 (three) to 22 (twenty-two) with a catchment area encompassing the 46 westernmost counties in North Carolina.

Established in 1894 the school provided significant milestones in deaf and blind Carolina School for the Deaf operates per the academic calendar from August to May with additional summer programming in June. Students are typically present on campus Sunday afternoons through Friday general support services and administration operate year-round.

Pursuant to House Bill 11 all employees hired in classified (and certified) positions on or after July 1 2024 are employed pursuant to Chapter 115C of the General Statutes. This includes any transfers to NCSD from another state agency who are currently considered Chapter 126 (SPA) employees.

This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

Supplemental Information:

NCSD uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject and not subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals. Hiring salary will be based on relevant qualifications internal equity and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
