Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Blacksmith is responsible for performing the following duties:
Ensure that all shoes comply with HISA regulations and IHRC regulations
Ensures Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses enter the Paddock being properly shod for their respective racing surfaces
Examine hooves for cracks bruises and other damage.
Remove worn defective or thrown shoes and replace them with new ones.
Close attention to detail when examining hooves and shoes.
Communication skills: Interact with trainers assistant trainers and other team members.
Make decisions and use sound judgment.
Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of the horse racing industry.
General knowledge of horse racing rules and regulations.
Advanced attention to detail.
General communication interpersonal and organizational skills are required to interact effectively with team members trainers and assistant trainers.
General ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
Displays willingness to make decisions.
Exhibits sound and accurate judgment.
Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.
Monitors own work to ensure quality.
Observes safety and security procedures.
Follows instructions responds to management direction.
All other duties as assigned by management.
Minimum of three 3 years of experience being a Blacksmith and in horse racing.
Extensive knowledge regarding shoeing horses and horseshoes that meet regulations.
Must have an outgoing energetic and enthusiastic attitude.
Ability to effectively communicate and to apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving variables in standardized situations.

Must be able to obtain and maintain an Indiana Horse Racing License.

Horseshoe Indianapolis is a smoking establishment therefore must be able to work in a smoking environment. Must be able to work in a highly populated fast-paced and noisy environment. Must be able to work in an environment subject to cold and/or hot temperatures rain wind sun dust animals insects etc.
