The Childbirth/Perinatal Educator supports Overlakes Community Education Program and is responsible for providing instruction and support on topics pertinent to parents during the childbearing years and throughout the family/parenting process.
The Childbirth Educator role includes childbirth prep labor coping newborn care breastfeeding classes and After Baby Comes Support Groups.
PER DIEM
Other duties include:
1. Ensures effective instruction
- Assesses the needs of class members at the beginning middle and end of each series or class. The instructor ensures curriculum is evidence based learner centered culturally sensitive and effective.
- Follows the curriculum outline when teaching with adaptations to meet expressed and/or assessed learner needs.
- Selects teaching method appropriate to learning styles needs of class members and curriculum objectives.
- Utilizes AV equipment and materials proficiently.
- Is able to work independently at an offsite classroom location.
2. Serves as hospital resource and liaison to parents
- Provides information about Overlakes Womens and Infant Services (WS) that is consistent with current philosophy policies and procedures.
- Provides information about current Overlake WS practices and standards of care encouraging informed decision making.
- When requested by or with the permission of the client shares relevant information with other healthcare providers.
- Facilitates class reunions and provides ongoing program and service assessment by soliciting feedback about services and programs.
3. Maintains documentation and records to ensure continuity of programs and quality assurance including the following:
- Class information and attendance records.
- Patient teaching documentation.
- Supplies and materials inventory as needed.
- Pertinent information conveyed to coordinator for placement on inpatient records.
- Other information as required.
4. Is an active team member as is evidenced by compliance with the following requirements:
- Adheres to Overlake Hospital Medical Center and unit philosophy policies procedures and standards.
- Completes mandatory educational and/or in-service offerings required for the position.
- Safeguards confidentiality of all patient information.
- Refers parents to appropriate programs and services in Perinatal Education and in the Parent & Baby Care Center
- Attends and participates in quarterly Perinatal Educator staff meetings.
5. Maintains professional and personal growth and development.
- Maintains knowledge and teaching skills in accordance with standards and qualifications established by Overlake Hospital Medical Center for teaching Perinatal Education programs; i.e. attends in-services continuing education programs and independent reading.
- Shares on a consistent basis information about Perinatal Education programs with other Overlake Medical Center instructors and the coordinator (i.e. staff meetings written and phone conversation).
- Functions as a preceptor for new hires following completion of requirements and in accordance with applicable policy and procedure.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school graduate required.
Professional Licensure/Certification/Registration: Must meet one of the following five levels of experience and/or credentials:
- Current Washington State or Multistate RN license with one (1) year of experience in childbirth education or completed coursework in childbirth education or
- Current Washington State LPN with one (1) year of experience in childbirth education or completed coursework in childbirth education or
- One of the following certifications: ASPO/Lamaze International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA) or CBE one year certification through accredited college or
- Currently enrolled in ASPO/Lamaze International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA) or CBE one year certification at an accredited college plus a minimum of one (1) year adult education experience. Must pass certification requirements within two (2) years of being hired to remain in position or
- Two years of experience as a childbirth or lactation educator.
