Summary:
The Senior X-Ray Technician/ Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is responsible for conducting radiographic inspections on energetic test hardware including boosters rocket motors warheads flares and addition this role ensures compliance with radiation safety protocols overseeing the safe use of radiation and radioactive materials to protect employees the public and the environment from potential hazards. This technician will be responsible for developing and maintaining the site Radiation Safety Management plan in coordination with the site Safety Manager. Additional duties will include implementing new technologies and developing training materials for all radiation equipment on the site.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Conduct radiographic inspections on energetic test hardware booster rocket motors warheads flares ammunition and other components critical to aerospace and defense applications.
- Develop test procedures and plans for all radiation operations
- Read specifications from technical documents (Test Standards Customer SOWs and Test Plans/Procedures) identify/prepare test equipment and quality checks to ensure optimal performance.
- Evaluate images and interpret test results in accordance with engineering specifications blueprints and process instructions.
- Monitor tests per specifications interact with customers if needed troubleshoot document all pertinent data.
- After test completion verify review and document all pertinent data accurately. Finalize data and send to the Program Manager. Maintain historical records for quality assurance.
- Maintain proper materials required for x-ray x-ray processer and associated equipment. Also maintains x-ray building and x-ray system.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on radiation equipment when capability is possessed on site.
- Adhere to all safety and environmental procedures.
Radiation Safety Officer (RSO):
- Ensure that all activities involving radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment comply with national and international safety standards and regulations. This includes staying updated on relevant legislation and guidelines.
- Develop implement and maintain comprehensive radiation protection programs to minimize exposure risks in accordance with state and federal regulations. This involves creating safety protocols and regularly reviewing and updating these programs to reflect changes in regulations or technology.
- Provide training and education to employees on radiation safety principles and practices and emergency response procedures. This includes ensuring that personnel working with radioactive materials receive appropriate training and certification.
- Conduct regular monitoring of radiation levels in work areas ensuring that exposure remains within safe limits. This includes overseeing the use of personal dosimeters and other monitoring devices.
- In the event of a radiation incident the RSO investigates and reports on the situation ensuring that all actions comply with regulatory guidelines.
- Provide technical support and expertise to other departments and stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and documentation of all radiation safety activities.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of current regulations and guidelines for radiation safety.
- These responsibilities may extend to cover other Element US Defense and Space sites which may include infrequent business travel.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Level 2 or Level 3 NDT certification.
- 3 years experience performing digital radiographic inspections of solid propellants or rubber components.
- 5 years of experience in radiation safety or a related field.
- Experience in radiation safety management.
- Must meet qualifications for Level II Certification in NAS410.
- Level 2 certification in Digital Radiography meeting industry standards.
- Minimum of 40 hours of digital radiography classroom training and 200 hours of digital radiographic testing experience.
- Must have excellent Safety record.
- Ability to comprehend written and oral directions and be able to follow standard procedures for quality and safety.
- These responsibilities may extend to cover other Element US Defense and Space sites which may include infrequent business travel.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Health Physics Medical Physics or a related field.
- 5 years experience performing digital radiographic inspections of solid propellants or rubber components.
- 8 years of experience in radiation safety or a related field.
- Extensive experience in radiation safety management.
- Previous experience in aerospace defense or manufacturing environments.
- 80 hours of formal classroom education in radiography.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to independently set up calibrate conduct tests evaluate results and document findings without supervision.
- Comprehensive knowledge of radiographic imaging techniques including their scope and limitations.
- Skills and knowledge to conduct system performance checks in accordance with the applicable process standard and instructions.
- Familiar with the codes standards and other contractual documents that control the method used.
- Strong understanding of state and federal regulations and guidelines for radiation safety.
- Familiarity with regulatory agencies and compliance requirements.
- Maintain the highest ethical standards even when challenged.
- Working knowledge of X-ray safety precautions.
- Understanding of radiologic science.
- Computer skills to use picture archiving and communications systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Excellent verbal communication and training abilities.
