About the opportunity
The Stock Assessment Scientist - Scalefish will contribute essential high-quality science to support the sustainable management of Tasmanias Scalefish fisheries and where required other fisheries assessed within the Sustainable Marine Collaboration Agreement (SMRCA). The role focuses on applying quantitative skills in fisheries modelling data analysis and stock assessment to generate robust evidence that informs management decisions. Working within the IMAS Fisheries and Aquaculture Modelling Program the position provides an opportunity for an emerging scientist to work closely with senior researchers government partners and industry stakeholders to address real-world marine resource challenges.
What youll do:
- Produce timely defensible stock assessment reports and well-structured quality-controlled data workflow for priority Scalefish species.
- Build strong relationships with Government and industry stakeholders through clear communication responsiveness and professional engagement.
- Undertake analysis modelling and interpretation and contribute to collaborative problem-solving within the Fisheries & Aquaculture Modelling Program.
- Contribute to the Universitys research goals by progressing peer-reviewed manuscript methodological improvement or funding proposals.
- Support supervision activities helping to foster student engagement in fisheries science.
What were looking for:
- A PhD or equivalent in a relevant field such as fisheries or marine science statistics quantitative ecology population dynamics or resource modelling.
- Demonstrated expertise or clear capacity to develop expertise in quantitative fisheries stock assessment including statistical modelling population indicators data analysis and end-to-end fisheries data stewardship.
- Experience engaging with stakeholders such as government agencies fisheries managers and industry representatives with scientific independence and integrity in multi-interest environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills including technical report writing data visualisation and delivery of information to scientific and non-scientific audiences.
- Ability to contribute to a collaborative research environment supporting data stewardship methodological improvement and innovation.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $155885 comprising base salary within the range of $114766 to $133235 plus 17% superannuation.
