2026 Summer Research Internship Econometric Research on Household Energy Affordability

Position Summary:

The RFF summer internship programprovides an opportunity for studentstoprepare forcareers that engage in academic and policy-relevant research. Interns are essential members of the Resources for the Future (RFF) Research and Policy Engagement team. Theyare responsible forproviding technical support that under the direction of RFF Fellows allowsfor the production ofcompelling and impactful research that aligns with RFFs mission of improving environmental energy and natural resource decisions through impartial economic research and policy engagement.

Our research internships are a 10-week programpaid at $20-$26an hourfor up to 35 hours a week. Applications will be open untilFebruary20. Interviewswill be conductedbeginning in March with hiring decisions made byApril24. Internships will run fromJune152026through August21 2026. Start or end dates can be changed with an approved exception.

All internships will be conducted in RFFs offices in Washington DC.

Project Summary:

Summer Research Intern (PAID):Econometric Research on Household Energy Affordability

We are seeking an intern toconductdata andeconometricanalysisrelated tohousehold energy affordabilityworking withJesse Buchsbaum (Fellow) and Jenya Kahn-Lang (Fellow).Working with the Fellows the intern will have a chance to explorecustomer-levelelectricity utility datainvestigating thedrivers of non-payment ofutility billsand energy-limiting behaviorsthe intersectionbetweenelectricity usage and consumers payment of electricity bills and/or the impacts of billingassistanceprograms for low-income customers. The intern will be able tohelpguidethe direction of the internshipwill contribute findings to an academic paperand depending on circumstancesthe internmay have the opportunity tocontinue collaboratingwith the Fellowson the paper beyond thepaidinternship.

Qualifications Experience & Competencies

• Education: Priority is given to candidates enrolled inagraduate programthat is relevant to RFFs research and motivated candidates in the social andnatural sciences with training in economics and quantitative methods or with a keen interest in public policy are encouraged to candidates studying economics policybusiness orfinance are preferredfor this position.
• Required:Econometrics training or coursework.
• Required: Strong writing skills.
• Preferred:Experience working with utility or energy-sector datasets.
• Preferred: Familiarity with electricity rates including how tariffs and rate structures are designed
• Preferred: Experience incomputational or statistical programming(e.g. R Stata Python).
• Preferred: Experience working with large datasets.
