General Schedule:

Expected work schedule is Monday through Friday with nights and weekends. As an exempt employee schedule may vary based on the number of hours needed to meet the job responsibilities. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning and/or evening to meet the needs of the department. Working schedule may consists of intermittent non-traditional business hours including but not limited to working nights and weekends associated with athletic events and practices. Travel may be required.

Position Overview:

Oversee and supervise all functions of sports medicine in the athletic department including but not limited to injury assessment treatment rehabilitation and prehabilitation. Responsibilities include management and supervision of personnel effective scheduling insurance processes inventory management strength and conditioning program and nutrition program.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

  • Serves as head athletic trainer for mens (5) and womens (10) intercollegiate sports programs. Oversees and coordinates prevention and treatment of injury.
  • Works with designated physicians group to assure the best medical diagnosis treatment and rehabilitation of athletic related injuries.
  • Supervises Associate and Assistant Athletic Trainers Graduate Assistants and student athletic trainers. Oversees alcohol and drug prevention including education and testing.
  • Manages and assists the third-party administrator in athletic medical insurance claims to the insurance companies and tracking their progress as necessary.
  • Administration and management of athletic training facilities medical coverage at practices and competitions injury prevention injury recognition emergency situation assessment etc.
  • Must possess an understanding of and adherence to the rules and regulations legalities standards and liabilities of the State of Oklahoma NCAA Conference and the University of Central Oklahoma relevant to the position.
  • Travels with teams and assigns other athletic training staff to travel as required or necessary. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Works closely with NCAA Athletic Compliance staff to ensure adherence to all applicable NCAA Conference and University regulations.
  • Serves as the NCAA designated Athletics Health Care Administrator and ensures completion of required NCAA required reports (i.e. Concussion Reporting Process Catastrophic Injuries etc.).
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of and adheres to applicable NCAA Conference University and departmental rules and regulations. Upon notification of any NCAA violation reports the violation to the Athletic Compliance Office. Also has a responsibility to follow applicable procedures and cooperate fully with any and all investigations of potential violations of NCAA Conference University or departmental rules and regulations. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Must be able to effectively conduct an initial assessment of an athletes injury or illness to provide emergency or continued care and to determine whether they should be referred to physicians for definitive diagnosis and treatment. Evaluate athletes readiness to engage in collegiate athletics and provide participation clearances when necessary and warranted. Apply protective or injury preventive devices such as tape bandages or braces to body parts such as ankles fingers or wrists. Assess and report the progress of recovering athletes to coaches physicians or designee. Coordinate and collaborate with team physicians to develop and implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries. Care for athletic injuries using physical therapy equipment techniques and/or medication.

Excellent oral and written communication interpersonal human relations public relations and organizational skills. Computer proficiency preferably in the Microsoft Suite. Ability to work independently handle multiple tasks simultaneously and interact professionally with all segments of the University community. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to make policy and procedure decisions. Must be detail oriented. Capacity for growth and leadership.

Qualifications Required:

Proof of passing Board of Certification (BOC) exam and ATC credential. Masters degree in Athletic Training or bachelors degree in Athletic Training if received prior to 2022 plus 5 years of experience as an athletic trainer. CPR/AED Rescue and First Aid Certification. Must have or obtain Oklahoma State Athletic Training License within 30 days of employment.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred:

Three years of experience as a Head Athletic Trainer and five years of certified athletic training experience.
