This posting is for 1 hourly position for up to 18 weeks

Do you have a passion for environmental stewardship This is your chance to make a meaningful impact on the health and sustainability of Strathcona Countys natural areas as a Vegetation Sprayer. Youll be part of a dedicated team committed to improving biodiversity enhancing public spaces and ensuring our community thrives for generations to this role within the Recreation Parks and Culture division youll help protect our landscapes by applying herbicides and using other control methods to manage invasive plants across public lands.

This position offers varietyyou may work independently as part of a team or take on supervisory responsibilities with seasonal crews. Expect hands-on physical work with hours that can vary depending on weather and operational needs.

The ideal candidate brings knowledge of herbicide application plant identification ecological restoration and risk mitigation to ensure the safety of residents animals and the environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mix and safely apply herbicides to control invasive plants in compliance with municipal provincial and federal legislation.
  • Maintain accurate records of herbicide applications using GIS software.
  • Perform daily monitoring maintenance and calibration of herbicide application equipment.
  • Carry out invasive plant management using manual and mechanical methods.
  • Inspect public properties for noxious/prohibited noxious weeds and conduct broadleaf weed counts.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to residents offering guidance on invasive plant identification and management practices.
  • Support the Vegetation Management Technician by training coaching and supervising seasonal staff on the Invasive Plant Management Team.
  • Anticipate and address potential issues by offering expertise and recommendations for effective weed management strategies.
  • Promote a safe working environment by ensuring all staff are performing their tasks safely by implementing safe work practices and procedures.
  • Use knowledge and train others in relation to OHS Regulation and Code and follow safety guidelines to keep self and others safe on the worksites.

Qualificationsand Skills:

  • High School diploma with three years related experience an environmental field.
  • Attending or completed post-secondary education in an environmental field would be considered an asset
  • Effective customer service public relations and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience in herbicide applications is an asset.
  • Plant identification skills would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of municipal provincial and federal policies and legislation is an asset.
  • Supervisory experience would be an asset.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers licence and submission of a 5-year Drivers Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Valid Pesticide Applicator Certificate (Landscape)
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Ability and willingness to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting (up to 23 kilograms) standing bending shoveling etc.
  • Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement and adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to work a variety of shift work
