University of Hawaii at West Oahu (UHWO) is a public primarily undergraduate institution with a strong commitment to teaching excellence and Native Hawaiian-serving mission. The Division of Mathematics Natural and Health Sciences (MNHS) invites applications for a permanent full-time tenure-track faculty member in the health science and related fields. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching various student populations securing resources for program support and engaging in research relevant to health science education.


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach 24 semester credits per academic year (typically 3 courses with 1 course release for service and research activities per semester) including but not limited to all levels of undergraduate courses in health science and related fields such as anatomy and/or physiology and kinesiology/exercise science using traditional innovative and varied learning modalities (online hybrid in-person).
  • Develop and deliver high-quality instruction to a multicultural student population including first-generation college students and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.
  • Assist in the planning and securing of resources (e.g. educational or research grants) for use in support of the MNHS Division and the Health Sciences/pre-Nursing program.
  • Support the design marketing and recruitment plan and materials to students.
  • Participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods tailored to the educational needs of health sciences and pre-nursing students.
  • Engage in scholarly and research activities in areas related to teaching health sciences and pre-nursing students.
  • Contribute to service at the division campus and system level including committee participation and program assessment.
  • Network with professional and community health organizations to develop additional clinical practicum and/or research sites for student internships.
  • Serve as faculty advisor for students in the program and perform other related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Assistant Professor (F-3)

  1. Doctoral degree in a health-related field (e.g. nursing medicine public health psychology).
  2. RHIA credential in good standing (no exceptions) and commitment to maintaining professional currency (AHIMA CEUs).
  3. Evidence of teaching excellence/effectiveness in health science and related fields (traditional hybrid and online).
  4. Evidence of scholarly and/or applied research related to the areas of teaching.
  5. Excellent communication planning and organizational skills; evidence of independence enthusiasm and self-direction.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to community representation and belonging including experience teaching and/or working in a multicultural environment and with various Indigenous communities (e.g. Native Hawaiian).
Associate Professor (F-4)
  1. In addition to minimum qualifications for the rank of Assistant Professor (F-3) record of at least five (5) years of full-time college/university teaching at the rank of Assistant Professor (or equivalent).
  2. Sustained scholarly productivity including peer-reviewed publications (or equivalent scholarly/creative activity) in the academic/professional field.
  3. Evidence of program leadership (e.g. curriculum coordination assessment accreditation participation) mentoring and professional/community development.
  4. Demonstrated ability to obtain external grant funding.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Ability to interact effectively in a multicultural setting; experience working with varied communities and demonstrated excellence in teaching to culturally varied students.
  2. Demonstrated experience teaching and training NH/PI students.
  3. Demonstrated ability to teach distance education courses.
  4. Experience in course assessment and institutional accreditation.
  5. Demonstrated experience in teaching writing extensive courses.
  6. Demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate pre-health profession/clinical skills.
