Job Summary

Chart tumour evolution using cutting-edge long-read and single-cell multiomics

Who we are

The Integrative Cancer Genomics lab (Jonas Demeulemeester) is embedded within the VIB KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology and two of the research departments of the VIB Life Sciences Institute within KU Leuven one of the worlds top 50 universities. Our diverse and international center is located on the University Hospital Campus Gasthuisberg where it hosts about 230 researchers and staff creating a vibrant ecosystem where fundamental research meets clinical practice.

What we do

Our cells continuously accumulate genetic and epigenetic changes that fuel somatic evolution through drift and selection. Over time these processes turn tissues into molecular mosaics containing competing subclones often carrying cancer driver mutations. We aim to bridge the gap between somatic genotypes and phenotypes using cutting-edge approaches including long-read sequencing (PacBio Nanopore) single-cell multiomics (e.g. doi: 10.1101/2025.09.08.674950) and AI/machine learning. We work closely with clinicians to translate our findings into clinical practice focusing on genomically complex sarcomas and haematological malignancies.

What you will do

As a postdoctoral researcher you will:

  • Analyse multiomic long-read and single-cell data from patient samples to develop novel biological insights
  • Contribute to recently funded projects on genomically complex sarcomas and somatic mosaicism with opportunities to develop your own research
  • Develop and apply computational tools and workflows for integrating multimodal datasets
  • Collaborate effectively across disciplines—working with clinicians biologists and data scientists
  • Present your work at international conferences and publish in high-visibility journals

Who we are looking for

We are seeking a motivated computational biologist with a passion for cancer genomics and a drive to tackle complex biological questions.

Essential:

  • PhD (or studying towards a PhD) in computational biology bioinformatics genomics statistics physics or a related quantitative field
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse large-scale sequencing data using R Python or equivalent
  • A self-motivated team player who thrives in a collaborative international environment
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken)

Nice to have:

  • Experience with cancer genomics single-cell analysis or long-read sequencing data
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing environments
  • Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals

What we offer

  • Cutting-edge infrastructure: state-of-the-art sequencing technologies single-cell platforms and high-performance computing
  • (Inter)national network: collaborate locally with international consortia and leading cancer centres (UCL Francis Crick Institute MD Anderson Cancer Center)
  • Career development: active support through mentorship opportunities to lead projects supervise PhDs and apply for independent fellowships
  • Vibrant community: active PhD and postdoc associations seminar series and a stimulating inclusive research environment
  • Competitive package: salary and benefits for 4 years according to VIB/KU Leuven scales with opportunities for training and conference attendance
