Job Summary

The State of Montana has a decentralized human resources (HR) system. Each agency is responsible for its own recruitment and selection. Required Education and Experience:

Level 1:

  • Associate Degree in electronics or construction technology or a related field.
  • 1 year of experience working within the traffic signal industry or related field.
  • Alternative combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Such as 3 years of related experience.
  • IMSA Level I Traffic Signal Technician certification preferred. Required to receive certification within 2 years of hire.
  • It is expected an employee at this level will move up the career ladder to the Level 2.1 position. The maximum amount of time an employee can be in the Level 1 position is 2 years not including time spent in a training assignment. If these requirements are not met it may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

    Level 2.1:

  • Associate Degree in electronics or construction technology or related field.
  • 3 years of technical experience in electronics or construction technology related to traffic signal design operation and maintenance.
  • Alternative combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Such as 5 years of related experience.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Bench Technician Level II Certification. Required to receive certification within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of electronics central network signaling and wireless and telecommunication network methodologies.

  • Knowledge of highway safety issues and construction practices and procedures.

  • Ability to calibrate and configure specialized traffic signal and VMS systems; system analyzers oscilloscopes volt meters soldering irons and other tools used for equipment calibration maintenance and repair.

  • Skills in testing diagnosing and resolving technical problems; operating personal computers and specialized software; and safely and effectively operating heavy vehicles and equipment.

Other Information

The successful candidate must pass a fingerprint background investigation as a condition of employment.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a Traffic Signal Technologist. This position is responsible for overseeing coordinating and performing a variety of traffic signal design installation analysis maintenance and repair activities to ensure optimum performance/functionality longevity and safe operations of MDT traffic signal systems. Duties also include planning organizing coordinating and directing MDT signal communication installation expansion and maintenance projects under direct and remote supervision.
