DescriptionThe Heavy-Duty R/A Mechanic performs troubleshooting inspections testing calibration overhaul repair modification installation preventive maintenance and in some cases fabrication on heating ventilation air conditioning air compressor and refrigeration systems/ equipment and their associated piping and controls systems.
ResponsibilitiesApplies knowledge of HVAC and related systems to provide temporary or permanent repairs to keep critical equipment operating
Selects estimates and orders necessary tools equipment and materials to accomplish repairs and modifications
Applies thorough knowledge of HVAC and thermodynamic principals in determining and ensuring proper operation of campus HVAC systems
Applies innovative techniques for troubleshooting and resolving operational problems
Assists in design reviews of HVAC design specifications and drawings for new and renovated campus buildings and systems including progress monitoring and inspections and initial checkout
Provides and maintains operations and maintenance information on such systems
Performs installation configuration calibration maintenance and troubleshooting on campus HVAC pneumatic controls systems
Assists and trains other employees in becoming proficient in the performance of assigned duties
Performs other duties as assigned
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
Knowledge of and experience in pneumatic electronic and digital control systems
Knowledge of principles of heating ventilation air conditioning and refrigeration with associated control systems
Knowledge of combustion systems air and water balancing thermodynamics psychometrics electrical power air compressors and dryers
Knowledge of HVAC system operations specifically Air Handlers VAVs pumped water systems boilers chillers heat exchangers
Ability to troubleshoot and repair chillers 40 tons and larger
Basic electrical repair skills high (up to 480v) and low voltage (24v)
Electric AC/DC controls troubleshooting skills including reading electrical diagrams
Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and schematics including control schematics and ladder diagrams
Must excel in troubleshooting of HVAC system problems
Review of applications will beginJanuary 19 2026and willcontinue until the position is received bythis datewill receive priority consideration.
QualificationsMinimum: Typically requires high school diploma and three years of relevant HVAC experience with a minimum of one year in HVAC controls; or an equivalent combination of education training and experience. Must possess CFC certification.
Preferred: Vocational or technical training in HVAC operations or comparable training field; ten years experience in general HVAC work; experience in control system computer interface; and experience in an institutional setting utilizing built-up HVAC systems is preferred.
