SDU Robotics part of theMaersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for one or more fully funded 3-year PhD positions where the candidate will work on manipulation of flexible objects using industrial robots via demonstration-initialized reinforcement starting datewill be agreed with the successful candidate. The workplace is at SDUs main campus in Odense Denmark and the work is expected to be primarily onsite.

Project description
We are currently extending our team working on theMADE REACT projectwhich focus on challenges within the design of robot solution for resilient high-mix low-volume manufacturing.

The aim of this PhD project is to enable fast setup of robot manipulators to complete advanced manufacturing tasks by the use of digital models. This should be accomplished using methods such as reinforcement learning that should be initialized with information from human demonstrations. The developed method should be applied to the manipulation of flexible objects based on both visual and tactile information. The candidate will be responsible for developing detailed simulation models of both robots sensors and components to be addition the candidate should develop robust manipulation strategies and implement these in a real robot system.

Profile and requirements
The candidate will participate in SDU Robotics comprehensive research and teaching activities within the area of robotics. The position requires a masters degree(equivalent to a Danish masters degree) within a relevant robotics area or a similar field and the candidate is expected to have a profound knowledge on the majority of the following topics:

  • Robot control
  • Reinforcement learning
  • Simulation of robot dynamics
  • Deployment of learning-based solutions

Preferably the candidate has experience with:

  • Signal processing
  • Experimental design and data analysis

Furthermore the successful candidate is expected to:

  • Have excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken).
  • Have high self-motivation to learn.
  • Be able to work well and communicate expert knowledge in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Have the ability of working independently.
  • Have a strong sense of responsibility.

Research environment
The candidate will be integrated in the section SDU Robotics which is at the core of the Odense Robotics Clusterinvolving Universal Robots Mobile Industrial Robots (MIR) and 120+ other companies. We are a team of appr. 60 researchers specialized in robot solutions involving modelling estimation and control of advanced robot technologies.

The group is involved in a variety of national and European projects and features a strong network of academic and industrial partners. We solve challenging research problems from real applications and implement novel robot solutions together with end users such as Novo Nordisk LEGO and Danfoss.

ODENSE

Conditions of employment
Appointment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position and the monthly gross salary incl. pension is 36.608 DKK. If you have relevant postgraduate experience you may be placed on a higher salary step.
