Description of Work
Positions perform skilled work in the maintenance repair and/or construction of buildings and facilities. Work requires specialization in two or more technical trades in connection with maintenance of facilities related equipment and machinery. Positions function at the journey level in multiple skilled trades such as electrical plumbing masonry heating and air or similar specializations. Work assignments are complex and require planning and coordination of multiple trade disciplines. Positions function with limited oversight and seek input from higher level trades specialists in the completion of novel maintenance problems and issues. Work is performed independently; however positions may refer unusual work problems to their supervisor for consideration and final determination. Positions provide technical guidance to other positions engaged skilled semiskilled or unskilled maintenance work. Positions ensure that work performed adheres to established maintenance repair and/or construction standards.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
The Maintenance/Construction Technician III position reports directly to the Assistant Warden.The primary purpose of this position is to perform routine preventative and corrective maintenance tasks and repairs ensuring that assigned systems within the correctional facility and support buildings are maintained in a safe and efficient manner. Other job duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:
Requiring specialization in two or more technical trades in connection with maintenance of facilities related equipment and machinery.
Functioning at the journeymen level in multiple skilled trades such as electrical plumbing masonry heating and air or similar specializations.
Completing work assignments that are complex and require planning and coordination of multiple trade disciplines.
Functioning with limited oversight and seek input from higher level trades specialist in the completion of novel maintenance problems and issues. (Work is performed independently; however position may refer unusual work problems to their supervisor for consideration and final determination.)
Providing technical guidance to other positions engaged in skilled semi-skilled or unskilled (including offenders) maintenance work.
Performing work that adheres to established maintenance repair and/or construction standards.
Following oral and written instructions.
Possessing the ability to have physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time.
Possessing skills in the use of tools required in various technically complex trades.
Understanding and working from sketches or penciled drawings. Operating common types of machines shop or woodworking power equipment.
Reading and interpreting both building codes and blueprints.
This is afull-time position(40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours ofMonday - Friday1st Shiftand may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.
Note to Current State Employees:
The salary grade for this position isNC09 Salary Range ($39671 - $69426). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.
About Western Correctional Center for Women (WCCW):
Western Correctional Center for Women (formerly Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women) opened on July 7 2008 and is a minimum custody facility housing approx. 360 female offenders located in Black Mountain NC. WCCW renovated four dormitories: Greenwood Frye Sloop and Gilliat. Renovations on the vocation building provided offenders with an educational classroom and an operating greenhouse. Renovations to the Buchanan building accommodated the increasing offender population and offer more educational classrooms and a medical wing. On Oct. 4 2021 the facilitys name was changed to Western Correctional Center for Women.
Management Preferences:
Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge skills and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.
Documented working knowledge of commercial/industrial maintenance.
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations Part 82 Subpart F.EEO Statement
