The dental hygiene program at the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene is the only baccalaureate level program in the state. It offers the educational preparation required of dental hygienists to provide oral health care and education to the people of Hawaii the continental U.S. and the Pacific-Asia region. Students majoring in dental hygiene can become licensed professionals who offer preventive education and therapeutic services for the control of oral diseases and the promotion of optimum oral health. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from a Commission on Dental Accreditation institution;
  • Minimum of 20 hours per week of General Dentistry clinical experience for the last 5 years (2016-present);
  • Current State of Hawaii Dental (dentist) licensure to practice;
  • Demonstrated active involvement in community service and organizations or professional associations;
  • Able to work flexible hours (Monday - Saturday starting as early as 6:00 a.m. and working late as 7:00 p.m. depending on assigned courses); and
  • Meet CE requirements for state licensure and Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards for faculty teaching in a dental hygiene program.
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching and patient care; poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Specialization in periodontology.
  • 1-2 years recent (2020-present) teaching experience in a dental educational setting.
  • Familiar with Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards for Dental Hygiene education.
