Description of Work

This posting is for an Engineering Technician I position in the Smithfield Construction Resident Engineers Office. This position performs technical duties supporting engineers and other professionals in areas such as construction inspection surveying materials testing materials sampling erosion control inspection and construction traffic control audits on assigned projects. Work functions may include: inspection for compliance and/or code; collection and analysis of field data; testing of materials; review and interpret design plans; analysis of engineering related data and/or product data. Duties may also include: construction layout measuring staking marking and clearing brush. This position will perform other related duties as required.

Salary Grade: NC07 Salary Range:$ 35984 - $62971

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts practices and theories used in construction construction inspection and/or construction surveying.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment including iPad and software.
  • Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
  • Knowledge of standards and specifications and plan reading experience.

Additional Expectations

Evaluate and apply engineering judgment to plan interpretation; establish and maintain positive lines of communication between technicians engineers contractors and public. Traverse rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Ability to work in close proximity to high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Accurately maintain daily records of work accomplished.

Safety-toed shoes required.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.

**Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associates degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

If there are no qualified candidates remaining in the applicant pool who meet the minimum Education and Experience or Knowledge Skills and Abilities required for the position the agency may consider for this position a trainee who does not meet the minimum requirements. Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up accordingly when the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.
